Things of Poetry

Poppies

line the canyon trail,

brightening

each hiker’s way.

Passing greetings

share the joy

as the morning sun

intensifies

the canyon colors

brilliantly reflected

by each poppy,

the things

of O’Keeffe —

real poetry.

Female Anna’s Hummingbird   Leave a comment

Female Anna's Hummingbird-framed blogFemale Anna’s Hummingbird — Image by kenne

One day a hummingbird flew in–
It fluttered against the window til I got it down
where I could reach it with an open umbrella– —
When I had it in my hand it was so small
I couldn’t believe I had it–but I could feel the intense life–
so intense and so tiny– …You were like the humming bird to me…
And I am rather inclined to feel that you and I know
the best part of one another without spending much time together– —
It is not that I fear the knowing– It is that I am at this moment
willing to let you be what you are to me–
it is beautiful and pure and very intensely alive.

The meaning of a word

— to me — is not as exact

as the meaning of a color.

Colors and shapes

make a more definite

statement than words.

When you take a flower in your hand and really look at it,

it’s your world for the moment.

I want to give that world to someone else.

Most people in the city rush around so,

they have no time to look at a flower.

I want them to see it whether they want to or not.

Desert Marigold   Leave a comment

I feel that a real living form is the natural result
of the individual’s effort to create the living thing
out of the adventure of the spirit into the unknown
— where it has experienced something — felt something —
it has not understood — and from that experience
comes the desire to make the unknown — known —

Making the unknown — known — in terms of one’s medium
is all absorbing — if you stop to think of form — as from
you are lost — The artist’s form must be inevitable —
You mustn’t think you won’t succeed —

Our Association With Flowers   2 comments

Wildflowers July 2015-0018 grunge art blog Grunge Art by kenne

Everyone has many associations with a flower —
the idea of flowers.
You put out your hand to touch
the flower —
lean forward to smell it —
maybe
touch it with your lips almost without thinking —
or give it to someone to please them.
Still —
in a way —
nobody sees a flower —

really — it is so small . . .

So I said to myself —
I’ll paint what I see —

what the flower is to me
but I’ll paint it bid and

they will be surprised into taking time to look at it —
I will make even busy New Yorkers
take time
to see what I see in flowers.

Tell me what you think art is . . .   3 comments

Tell me what you think art is — if you can

— ask a lot of people — and see if anybody knows . . .

You ask me about music — I like it better than anything

in the world — Color gives me the same thrill once in

a long long time — I can almost remember and count the times

— it is usually just the outdoors or the flowers — or a person —

sometimes a story — or something that will call a picture

to my mind — will affect me like music —

Why I Live In Tucson — “. . . take one as needed”   6 comments

SWALL“Swallows” by Benjamin Chee Chee (Of Ojibwa descent, this Canadian artist died at a very young age, 32.
I first became aware of his work 20 years ago and fall in love with his art.)

Why I live in Tucson, “. . . take one as needed”

The sky is more than blue,
it’s “Tucson blue”
as I walk the trails,
sometimes in pain,
but always convivial
in fellowship with nature
where it is strong
medicine in the air —

. . . take one as needed.

Landscapes draw inspiration,
subtle and complex
as an O’Keeffe painting,
everywhere you look
(with a trained eye)
stories of the past
can be heard
in your mind’s ear —

. . . take one as needed.

Allowing the mind
to enclose infinity
(yes, the mind can)
for the moment
to accommodate
all the sounds
all the smells
all observable images —

. . . take one as needed.

Diversity, a word
often heard when
describing the Sonoran desert
(the source of that concept)
and the purposes
all living things play
trying to be worthy
recipients of each breath —

. . . take one as needed.

Each day brings
an appreciation
of every moment,
that every second
does really count
as time builds moments
that will forever echo
off the mountains —

. . . take one as needed.

When not walking the trails
I continue learning,
learning about desert ecology
and the ways of the past
so that I can be part
of those people
who came before me
and sow their seeds —

. . . take one as needed.

Here we have city ways
and village ways,
yin and yang
creating a special blend
allowing those who
dream to live in between
the Tucson blue
and the desert night stars —

. . . take one as needed.

Capturing The Moment — Yellow Cactus Flower   3 comments

Test“Yellow Cactus Flower” — Image by kenne

Flowers are not meant
to last forever,
so we cherish
the moments.

Most cactus flowers
last only a day
leaving behind
beautiful memories

for those fortunate
to gaze  upon them
in the early
morning sun

while others
share the moment
painting
what they see.

The Zen Of Steer Skulls   5 comments

Steer Skulls — Image by kenne

O’Keeffe captured
The steer’s mystical power
Over the southwest.

Death is good for us
Which many seek to embrace
A Zen kind of thing.

The skull of two horns
Guard over empty openings
To our secret soul.
