Buttonbush and Viceroy butterfly (1 of 1)-2 blog

Viceroy Butterfly on Buttonbush (1 of 1) art blogViceroy Butterfly on Buttonbush — Images by kenne

I went for a walk in Sabino Canyon early this morning to check out the Sabino creek flow over the dam. Above the dam near the creek I found a lot of buttonbush in bloom, with a lot of insects swarming over the flowers. One of the many insects was this beautiful viceroy butterfly.

With all the insect interest, I can see why another common name is “honey-bells.” They may be honey to insects, but this plant contains the poison CEPHALATHIN. Cephalathin will induce vomiting, paralysis, and convulsions if ingested.

Painted Lady (1 of 1) Art blogPainted Lady Butterfly — Photo-Artistry by kenne

I love photographing flowers,
except when it’s windy.

Photographing butterflies
can be frustrating —

they keep moving whether
or not, the wind is blowing.

Once I have the photograph
I can say things painting

in colors and layers
I can’t say with words.

“You Land Lightly” — Computer Art by kenne

You land lightly
as a butterfly
upon a thistle

gently bathed
in nature’s radiance
coloring the landscape

which I capture
curving the contrast
against darkness.

Great Purple Hairstreak — Mission Accomplished   1 comment

Great Purple Hairstreak On Patio Wall (1 of 1)-4 blog

After a morning run
on a chilly desert morning,
I walked out on the patio
with a cup of black coffee.

Noticing a
Great Purple Hairstreak

on the patio floor, motionless
from the forties temperature,

And wanting to help her
on her morning flight,
I placed her in the sun
on the patio wall

Where she fail on her side
a couple of times
before finally steadying
herself
in the sunlight.

Taking longer
than expected
for her to take flight,
I went inside for more coffee.

Returning to the patio,
the countdown was completed,
I had missed her liftoff —
Mission accomplished.

A Butterfly Lights Beside Us

A butterfly lights beside us, like a sunbeam…
and for a brief moment it’s glory
and beauty belong to our world…
but then it flies on again, and although
we wish it could have stayed,
we are so thankful to have seen it at all.

Lizard Walk (1 of 1)-15 Painted Lady blogPainted Lady Butterfly On A Rock — Image by kenne

This time of year I spend more time hiking on Mt. Lemmon that I do doing nature walking in Sabino Canyon. The exception was yesterday’s SCVN Lizard Walk. During the walk, which I will be posting on later, we saw a few butterflies. Currently, there are naturalists doing butterfly counts. I haven’t seen a report on the numbers, but from my observation trying to photograph them, the numbers are low.

The above image of a painted lady is one of the few butterflies I saw, at least that stopped for a moment. Maybe I would have seem more if I had been looking for butterflies rather than lizards.

A Little Ragged Around The Edges — Angle Wings   4 comments

Ned's Nature Walk-9743 Mourning Cloak framed blog“A Little Ragged Around The Edges” Mourning Cloak Butterfly — Image by kenne

One of the host plants for the mourning cloak is the desert willow, where this butterfly has overwintered in the Sabino Canyon dam area, perching in sunny openings waiting for receptive female. Looks like winter has been rough on this male mourning Cloak, however the wing edges of this mourning cloak butterfly is an indication that he belongs to a subset called the “angle wings,” making them look like “angel wings.”

Angel Wings

My wings are not
ragged around
the edges,
what you see
are angel wings —
looks are deceiving.
