Pipevine Swallowtail Butterfly — Image by kenne
This butterfly has arrived,
I watch wondering
if it knows of its
new freedom
still holding on to a host
in a new beautiful
yet tragic existence
with three perceptions
of life in one world.

A Light Exists In Spring
A Light exists in Spring
Not present on the Year
At any other period —
When March is scarcely here
A Color stands abroad
On Solitary Fields
That Science cannot overtake
But Human Nature feels.
It waits upon the Lawn,
It shows the furthest Tree
Upon the furthest Slope you know
It almost speaks to you.
Then as Horizons step
Or Noons report away
Without the Formula of sound
It passes and we stay —
A quality of loss
Affecting our Content
As Trade had suddenly encroached
Upon a Sacrament.
— Emily Dickinson

Queen Butterfly (December 8, 2016) — Image by kenne
The butterfly obtains
But little sympathy
Though favorably mentioned
In Entomology –
Because he travels freely
And wears a proper coat
The circumspect are certain
That he is dissolute –
Had he the homely scutcheon
Of modest Industry
‘Twere fitter certifying
For Immortality –

Mexican Yellow Butterfly on a Mexican Bird of Paradice — Image by kenne
Many butterfly images
before one good one.
Another butterfly
flies by, I focus
on a yellow one.
Snap, and Snap again,
trying to be invisible
in the bright sunlight.
A cloud moves by,
shooting manually,
I change settings.
Why shoot manual?
Prefer working with
options, having choices.
The sun comes back out
only to give way
to more clouds.
Wind gusts
move the flowers
as butterflies move on —
it is the monsoon season,
distant thunder
is a reminder.
