Even More Than Hope: Painted Lady Butterflies
Like spirits, they will dart across our path
in drifts, and zig-zag past our cheeks and hands
just out of reach, and whirling toward a land
far north of us, by predetermined math.
It seems a miracle, winged migration—
almost as hard to fathom as moon flight.
What tiny compass guides them day and night
in rivers of raw determination?
Their journey symbolizes more than hope:
They breathe into each moment the belief
that happiness as real and bright as wings
is just ahead … and therefore we can cope,
and fill heavy hearts with newfound lightness,
and bathe a moment more in their brightness.

A bright afternoon
no vultures circling
only butterflies
landing briefly
as if to change
the decision to land
yellows and reds
muscling their way
through leaves of green.

A Beautiful Painted Lady — Image by kenne
Painted Lady,
elixir of
colors
true love of
flowers
under exquisite
skies
in the shadow of
mountains
remembering all
goodbyes.

Society is like a stew.
If you don’t stir it up every once in a while
then a layer of scum floats to the top.

There is no time for despair,
no place for self-pity,
no need for silence,
no room for fear.
We speak,
we write,
we do language.
That is how civilizations heal.

I gently rub
my beard
in deep thought
distracted only
by an occasional
butterfly
passing by
in the middle
of the day.
I savor
the moment
rubbing
white whiskers
navigating through
mind droppings
reaching out
to catch
a falling star.
The desert sky
bluer than the
bluest of blues
a backdrop to
sun-scalded red
creating visuals
turning to words
honed by the soul
itching to be scratched.
