Pools Of Sorrow, Waves Of Joy   2 comments

This time of year Tanuri Ridge is brightened with yellow Palo Verde blossoms under beautiful spring skies. This posting first appeared April 2014 with the poem, “Our Neighborhood — Trying to Reason,” which includes the line “pools of sorrow waves of joy” from the Beatles song, “Across the Universe.”

OUR NEIGHBORHOOD — TRYING TO REASON

We traverse these streets,
sometimes early in the morning,
sometimes late in the day,
sometimes walking,
sometimes running —
always for a reason.

We wave at passersby,
sometimes we greet them,
sometimes it’s just a smile
sometimes we stop and talk,
sometimes walking together,
always for a reason.

We have neighborly expectations,
sometimes it’s watering plants,
sometimes it’s calling the ill,
sometimes it’s being complimentary,
sometimes it’s being watchful,
always for a reason.

We can be a convivial people,
sometimes we go out together,
sometimes we party together,
sometimes we join clubs together,
sometimes we share community work,
always for a reason.

We can be adversaries,
sometimes our expectations are not real,
sometimes we overreact,
sometimes we take reactions personally,
sometimes power is polarized, frustration generalized,
always for a reason.

We can be Pleasantville,
sometimes we are without color,
sometimes we are in pools of sorrow,
sometimes we are in waves of joy,
sometimes drifting through my open mind,
always for a reason.

I attend to this moment
less it goes unattended
by the bee flying
in and out of time
only to be lost in a
wild thyme unseen
just to be conquered
and reconciled again.

I’ll Take My Spring On The Rocks   1 comment

The Shape of Water“I’ll Take My Spring On the Rocks” (Sabino Creek near the dam.) — Image by kenne

“When you sit in silence long enough,
you learn that silence has a motion.

It glides over you without shape or form,
exactly like water.
Its color is silver.
And silence has a sound you hear
only after hours of wading inside it.

The sound is soft,
like flute notes rising up,
like the words of glass speaking.

Then there comes a point
when you must shatter
the blindness of its words,
the blindness of its light.”

Signs Of Spring In The Desert — Photo Essay by kenne

Desert Song

I thirst
for your rivers
your rippling mesas of sand
gold mirrors
on your sinuous curves

I thirst
for the saguaro
for the sweet juice of cactus
in the prickling sweat
of a desert sun

I thirst
for the searing of hot valleys
the bend of shimmer and heat
that bow that arcs the arrow
toward this center, my heart

I thirst
for the bloom, the sweet
languorous smells
this subtle perfume
elusive, as the scuttle of desert life

I thirst
for this tallest, deepest night
of stars and silence
when the moon is only a moon
silvering this light

— Ruth Housman

Another sign of spring in the desert are our reptile friends, most scurrying about making it difficult to photograph. But not the eastern collared lizard (Crotaphytus collaris), who like to pose for you on a nearby rock.

Welcome back, my friend — it is spring time in the Sonoran desert.

The morning air is dry

the sky is blue

a perfect time, thereby,

A Sunflower For Joy   6 comments

My best clothes

hang useless

next to old

faded t-shirts —

KLOL Rock Radio,

Chicago Blues Festival,

Sprint for Life,

all hiding memories

not forgotten, only

reserved for reasons

I cannot explain

nor feel I need to —

memories shared

like sunflowers

with Joy,

the secrets

routine prevents us

from discerning.

Nobody knows this little Rose—
It might a pilgrim be
Did I not take it from the ways
And lift it up to thee.
Only a Bee will miss it—
Only a Butterfly,
Hastening from far journey—
On its breast to lie—
Only a Bird will wonder—
Only a Breeze will sigh—
Ah Little Rose—how easy
For such as thee to die!

More than 400 artists and food venders from across the U.S. in this year’s spring 4th Avenue Street Fair. This semi-annual (Fall and Spring) fair draws crowds of 200,000 to 350,000 and ranks as one of the top visual arts fairs in the country. With the beautiful spring weather this weekend, a record crowd is expected. This year more than 20 percent of them are brand new to the show.

One of the new attractions this spring was a food-eating contest put on by US Fries. Contestants were challenged to eat as many poutine dishes (a Canadian dish that consists of french fries, gravy, and cheese curds) as possible within five minutes.

Capturing The Moment –Parry Penstemon   4 comments

The trail has become a school.
Why was I not surprised?
Sometimes hikers walk without a sound.
The hiker listens, as animals move
in their stillness to go unnoticed.
Just as the cancer entered her body,
unnoticed, without a sound.
Why were we surprised?
