The Flower That Smiles Today   Leave a comment

The flower that smiles to-day
To-morrow dies;
All that we wish to stay
Tempts and then flies.
What is this world’s delight?
Lightning that mocks the night,
Brief even as bright.

— from The Flower That Smiles Today by Percy Shelley

Revisiting Mt. Lemmon Wildflowers #9   Leave a comment

This summer, the Big Horn Fire caused so much damage to the National Forest
in the Santa Catalina Mountains remains closed to the public. Therefore,
hiking and photographing wildflowers in the Catalinas will not be in 2020,
which provides a good excuse to revisit some wildflower photos over the past ten summers.

The Mountain

The mountain sat upon the plain
In his eternal chair,
His observation omnifold,
His inquest everywhere.

The seasons prayed around his knees,
Like children round a sire:
Grandfather of the days is he,
Of dawn the ancestor.

— Emily Dickinson

I’ve lived at Cold Mountain — how many autumns.
Alone, I hum a song — utterly without regret.
Hungry, I eat one grain of Immortal-medicine
Mind solid and sharp; leaning on stone.
