Sonoran Storms (June 26, 2015) — Image by kenne
The rains are “hit and miss,”
mostly miss in the valley.
The monsoon arrived
early this summer
and as usual
the higher elevations
have received most of the rain
leaving only rainbows
in the late afternoon sky.

Mexican Bird of Paradise — Images by kenne
Sometimes called the Red Bird of Paradise, this fast growing plant comes on quickly in the spring from being cut back after the first in the late fall. Although it’s considered an evergreen, the cooler fall desert nights cause it to loose any remaining blossoms and begin to loose leaves. Until then, they add a lot of color to our desert landscape.

Patio Sun Screen — Image by kenne
Our patio is where we can sit and watch the sunset. But when the temperatures start going over 100 degrees, it’s time for the patio sun screen. Through the screen we can watch the sunset with the shadows of the sago palm and olive tree on the screen — beautiful day in the desert!
We almost made it through May without hitting triple digits.

no leaders, please
invent yourself and then reinvent yourself
don’t swim in the same slough.
invent yourself and then reinvent yourself
and
stay out of the clutches of mediocrity.
invent yourself and then reinvent yourself,
change your tone and shape so often that they can
never
categorize you.
reinvigorate yourself and
accept what is
but only on the terms that you have invented
and reinvented.
be self-taught.
and reinvent your life because you must;
it is your life and
its history
and the present
belong only to
you.

Prickly Pear Cactus Blossom — Image by kenne
A rose, well, a rose was
just a prom queen standing still
for a photo. Mountain sunsets,
waterfalls, they were postcards to send
to good friends who trusted happiness
occurred, if at all, in other places.

House On The Ridge Leave a comment
House On The Ridge — Image by kenne
Sky over the mountains
House on the ridge
Palo Verde blossoms
Reflect the setting sun
Two big trees
Make the house
Not one to be forgotten.
Minds wander over yonder
Wind-blown memories
Take to seed
Over the ridge
In words and images
Becoming desert fuel
Gone in the dry air.
Billions of years
In the making
Forming a place
Before there was a place
Traced through time
Having no meaning
Before time was time.
On the basin’s edge
Once torn apart
From the ancient upland
On a different continent
Possibly under water
Mocking the notion
Of permanence.
Existence has no meaning
Other than we are here
Attaching words
To what is evolving
In our concept
Of moments
Moving through space.
Sun has long set
Now in the darkness
The house on the ridge
No longer exist
Only in the mind’s eye
Becoming something
In our own nature.

Great Purple Hairstreak — Mission Accomplished 1 comment
After a morning run
on a chilly desert morning,
I walked out on the patio
with a cup of black coffee.
Noticing a
Great Purple Hairstreak
on the patio floor, motionless
from the forties temperature,
And wanting to help her
on her morning flight,
I placed her in the sun
on the patio wall
Where she fail on her side
a couple of times
before finally steadying
herself in the sunlight.
Taking longer
than expected
for her to take flight,
I went inside for more coffee.
Returning to the patio,
the countdown was completed,
I had missed her liftoff —
Mission accomplished.

Darkness, My Old Friend 1 comment
Darkness My Old Friend — Image by kenne
Hello darkness, my old friend
I’ve come to talk with you again
Because a vision softly creeping
Left its seeds while I was sleeping
And the vision that was planted in my brain
Still remains
Within the sound of silence
