One of the best places to see spring wildflowers in southern Arizona is at Picacho Peak State Park, so early yesterday morning Tom Markey and I drove up I-10 for an hour to the park, not to hike to the top of the peak, but to hike the west trail to observe and photograph the wildflowers. The rains this winter have not only produced beautiful wildflowers, but made the desert very green, which adds contrast to the views. This posting is meant to give you a feel for our hiking into the sun on the backside of Picacho Peak setting the stage for wildflower photos to be posted later.

It’s Rodeo Time In The Sonoran Desert   1 comment

THE ILLUSORY WORLD

Sage

This world is but a winery,
Its host and master Father Time,
Who caters only to those steep’d
In dreams discordant, without rhyme.

For people drink and race as though
They were the steeds of mad desire;
Thus some are blatant when they pray,
And others frenzied to acquire.

Few on this earth who savor life,
And are not bor’d by its free gifts;
or divert not its streams to cups
In which their fancy floats and drifts.

Should you then find a sober soul

Amidst the state of revelry,
Marvel how a moon did find
In this rain cloud a canopy.

The Early Bird Gets A Worm, The Early Butterfly Gets A Rock   Leave a comment

Romero Pools (1 of 1)-29 Painted Lady blogThe Early Bird Gets A Worm, The Early Painted Lady Butterfly Gets A Rock (January 23, 2015) — Image by kenne

This painted lady butterfly maybe migrating from Mexico or has spent the winter in southern Arizona. Regardless, this little lady has decided to land on the side of a rock on the Romero Pools Trail in the Pusch Ridge area of the Santa Catalina Mountains. This time of year, by midday most butterflies appear not to be spending time stopping, but rather passing through, making them difficult to photograph. So, when one lands we take advantage of the moment — happy travels my little friend.

Añejo Like Fine Tequila   Leave a comment

I stared hard. . .
by Tony Mares

thinking of Charles Bukowski

I stared hard at the hard-edges painting
it was the sharp translucent line
meant to be a glimpse at a micro-mini
segment of the lace trim on a skirt
wrapped around the gorgeous curves
of a women longing for me
but inaccessible of the canvas
at least I could imagine her

That’s when I ordered my third tequila
drank it straight like #s 1 & 2
every woman at the bar glowed
more beautiful than the ladies
on a French postcard and shed
ten years just like that too bad
I am more aged than tequila añejo
not that hard or sharp anymore

Horse

What does the horse give you
That I cannot give you?

I watch you when you are alone,
When you ride into the field behind the dairy,
Your hands buried in the mare’s
Dark mane.

Then I know what lies behind your silence:
Scorn, hatred of me, of marriage.
Still, You want me to touch you;
You cry out As brides cry, but when I look at you I see
There are no children in your body.

Then what is there?

Nothing, I think.
Only haste
To die before I die.

In a dream, I watched you ride the horse
Over the dry fields and then
Dismount: you two walked together;
In the dark, you had no shadows.

But I felt them coming toward me
Since at night they go anywhere,
They are their own masters.

Look at me.
You think I don’t understand?
What is the animal
If not passage out of this life?

Capturing The Moment, Again — “The Three Wise Ravens”   Leave a comment

“The Three Wise Ravens” — Computer Art by kenne

*****

Tis the season of wonder,

the time of the golden dawn.

Three magi all in black,

barriers of exotic wisdom.

Ancient philosophers and priests

carefully phrasing their questions,

In union with good thought,

in word and in deed.

It is between these that

wise men choose what is right.

Peace and Goodwill To All,

Happy Holidays!

Folks sip margaritas and beer,
smoke babyback ribs, gorge themselves
on sweet corn and watermelon,
clamoring for the yearly fireworks show,
patriotic bombs bursting in air
to celebrate the unalienable rights
to send aliens back where they came from
and to treat everyone as an illegal
just for breathing the air of liberty
in the land of the free and home of the brave.
Storm clouds build on the mountains,
gusts whipping through the valley
shaking ancient saguaro to the roots.

Desert Fence Line   2 comments

Peloncillo MountainsDesert Fence Line — Image by kenne

We’d picked up all the fencing tools
And staples off the road.
An extra roll of “bob” wire
Was the last thing left to load.

I drew a sleeve across my face
To wipe away the dirt.
The young man who was helping me
Was tuckin’ in his shirt.

I turned around to him and said,
“This fence is finally done,
With five new strands of ‘bob’ wire
Shinin’ proudly in the sun.

There’s a race of men that don’t fit in,

A race that can’t stay still;

So they break the hearts of kith and kin,

And they roam the world at will.

They range the field and they rove the flood,

And they climb the mountain’s crest;

Theirs is the curse of the gypsy blood,

And they don’t know how to rest.
