The Early Bird Gets A Worm, The Early Painted Lady Butterfly Gets A Rock (January 23, 2015) — Image by kenne
This painted lady butterfly maybe migrating from Mexico or has spent the winter in southern Arizona. Regardless, this little lady has decided to land on the side of a rock on the Romero Pools Trail in the Pusch Ridge area of the Santa Catalina Mountains. This time of year, by midday most butterflies appear not to be spending time stopping, but rather passing through, making them difficult to photograph. So, when one lands we take advantage of the moment — happy travels my little friend.

Ocotillo Along The Trail — Image by kenne
During the desert dry times, the ocotillo looks like a gray stick, only to leaf-out after rain. Since the higher elevations tend to receive more rain than in the valley, many of the ocotillo on the Romero Pools Trail were becoming green sticks last week (February 15, 2013). Because it was a hazing morning, softening the suns, I choose to take more of a silhouette image of this early sign of spring in the mountains.
This image was taken last Friday — today (February 20th) this area is receiving a few inches of snow with rain here in the Tucson valley. The new leaves will do just fine.

The trail begins merciful,
level and wide for
our first steps.
The sun greeting us
rising above the mountains
warming the morning air.
Our path is straight
into the canyon
through winter’s brown.
Soon the trail narrows
turning left, then right
with carved rock stairs.
The pace slows as
fellow hikers snake-line
up the steep slopes.
As we near the first ridge,
the sky seems smaller,
staying alert with each step.
Hiking the lower canyon walls,
soon we reach the first saddle,
we break for the vistas.
Seeing no bighorn sheep,
only white rocks mistook
for their white rumps.
Climbing up and
around the next ridge,
water flowing from its top.
A steep drop in the trail
beckons thoughts of yet
another ridge to climb.
Reaching a thousand feet
above the trailhead before
hiking down to the pools.
Winter rains have provided
plenty of water for breathtaking
views of the pools and falls.
Spring break will bring
students’ cliff jumping into
the deeper Romero Pools.
I share a silent moment
above the pools with
only my shadow companion.
