Don’t . . .
Kiss me.
Touch me.
Cuddle me.
Just,
Color me.

Flowers are not meant
to last forever,
so we cherish
the moments.
Most cactus flowers
last only a day
leaving behind
beautiful memories
for those fortunate
to gaze upon them
in the early
morning sun
while others
share the moment
painting
what they see.

Edi Moore guided us to a couple of Macdougal’s Nipple Cactus in Molino Basin last Monday while hiking the area. These two are only about 4″ high and somewhat concealed by other plants and desert debris. This sighting was my first.
The blossoms had not yet opened on one plant, but should soon follow the other with beautiful greenish-yellow blossoms.
Although not that common, they are native to the desert’s higher elevations and are a protected plant. — Images by kenne

One of the first cactus blossoms in the spring are those of the Hedgehog cactus. They have been blooming around the Tucson area for about a week, adding spring beauty as some of the wildflowers pass on.
Yesterday I got a report that some saguaro cacti have begun to bloom, which is early for such blossoms. But, these giant cacti do have a way of blooming when they want to — it’s time to start watching for the return of the white-wing doves.

Cacti
Here’s some fact-i,
About some cacti,
They’re plants you shouldn’t touch,
Because their spiny leaves are sharp,
It might hurt too,too much!
Yes those pointy spines they have,
Are cacti’s shield and cape,
Helping water stay inside,
Through spines it can’t escape!
They love the desert,
Sun baked lands,
For water’s what they store,
Inside their bodies,
Or their roots,
Like clothing’s in a drawer…
Cacti,
Cacti,
Succulents,
Are really pretty cool,
Just don’t give a kiss to one,
Or miss some time at school…

Potted Cactus In Bloom — Images by kenne
Upon return from the Cubs spring training in Mesa last evening, we found one of our potted cactus plants in bloom — not to be outdone by the many cactus out in the desert in bloom, as noted in the earlier posting — http://kenneturner.com/2012/03/27/capturing-the-moment-cactus-blossoms-along-the-trail/
These beautiful blossoms don’t last long, so by the morning sunlight, some were beginning to close.
