Cooper’s Hawk in the Patio Olive Tree Near the Bird Feeder– Image by kenne
The feeder is our promise to small lives.
The hawk is the answer we cannot control.
When he drops—swift, inevitable—
the air itself seems to close.
Afterward, the patio is ordinary again,
except for the silence that lingers.

Gila Woodpecker — Photo-artistry by kenne
Gila Woodpecker
comes in loud,
like a drunk at noon,
runs the little birds off,
takes what isn’t his—
sweet red from
the humminbird glass.
I don’t blame him.
world’s built that way—
noise wins,
beauty keeps its distance.
still,
I raise my coffee,
to the bastard.

Curve-billed Thrasher at Patio Bird Feeder — Image by kenne
As I sit on our patio
watching birds land
in near-by mesquites
before flying to the
olive tree on the patio,
then gathering the nerve
to bolt to the bird feeders.
They are not pleased
that I sit on the patio
with a camera in hand.
Soon, the desire to eat
takes priority over fear.

Greet each man with words of love
And peace,
And a dove will be placed
On an olive tree.

Pyrrhuloxia On A Hot Day At The Feeder — Images by kenne
Dapper in looks and cheerful in song, the Pyrrhuloxia or desert cardinal is a tough-as-nails songbird

Drought Resistant
Tomorrow early, I will go to the canyon
and take photos of the fall colors,
but today I am staying home
trying to stay warm without a fire
in the fireplace watching the birds
gathering at the feeder.
Last night I could hear a few raindrops
landing on the skylight knowing that
it won’t last, and it didn’t — this is the desert.
I am amazed how long desert plants
can survive without water, but then
that’s why they are called drought resistant.

Cooper’s Hawk Visits Our Patio Fountain (July 10, 2016) — Image by kenne
This hawk was attracted by the doves below the bird feeder on the patio.
With a temperature of 103 degrees, might as well take a water break.
