Our oleander tree
nurtured seed pods for months,
whether it was its time,
or nights in the low twenties,
the pods have opened.
Let the wind blow
the seeds of the future.

Bougainvillea Images by kenne
The December solstice, also known as the winter solstice in the northern hemisphere is December 21, 2012. However, two mornings ago the temperature in the Tucson area hit 32 degrees or below. The Bougainvillea is a very sensitive plant to freezing, which tells us that winter in the desert has arrived ten days before the winter solstice — goodbye till next spring!

Winter’s Breath on Desert Lands
Be all but gone the tumbleweed
With breaths of desert winds
A stillness
Then labored sigh
The land receives its winter rain
Dry river beds spew the overflow
When clouds calm, and day appears
Suspended in dusk
Breath is caught in hues of haze
Snow falls,
Yet melts on earth so parched
Frost bends the Palm
Again the sun will kiss
The misty morn’
Fractured fields of dust and dearth
Slumber
Beneath blankets stiff with ice
Winter’s breath on desert lands

Lorenzo Alonso realizes his jumper cables are too short to reach from his car to Cicreo Mata’s truck. Alonso’s battery died from sitting for over four hours in traffic backups on I-45 near Quitman Street.
Houston, you shared our pain, now we return the favor.

Ice closed the Robinson Road / Woodlands Parkway bridge that spans I-45 this morning in Oak Ridge North.

now it’s time
to turn the page
you know it ain’t easy
to see another view
but, these feelings
won’t go away
echoing off all tomorrows
echoing . . .
echoing . . .
