Panorama of Wasson Peak Near The Top
SCVN guided hike to Wasson Peak via Kings Canyon trail, which is about a seven mile (roundtrip) hike and elevation gain of 1,900 ft.
Some of our hikers made only the Kings Canyon trail to the first saddle since we were experiencing unusually warm record-setting temperatures (the mid-90’s).

A trail beaten by foot and hoof,
Warmer than the air above
A winding path near the wash.
Providing a picture of contrasts,
To which the passing eye catches

Of the mountains surrounding Tucson, Santa Catalina, Rincon, and Santa Rita, the Tucson Mountains are lowest in elevation. Therefore, seeing snow on them is very unusual. The recent snows in the Tucson area provided for images rarely seen in this desert city.

Born in January, and given my independent nature, I feel a relationship to what some Native Americans called the Wolf Moon since it appeared when hunger wolves howled outside their villages. Technically the Wolf Moon occurred a little before midnight on the 26th. I seem to have more success in photographing the moon just before sunrise, so this Wolf Moon image was taken as it was about to set over the Tucson mountains.
On cold winter nights
Hunger wolves howl at the moon
A midnight high point.

This past Monday, the Monday Morning Milers hiked the Starr Pass Trail in the Tucson Mountains. The trail head is located near the JW Marriott Tucson Starr Pass Resort.

Lichen is a fungus that grows symbiotically with algae, resulting in a composite organism that characteristically forms a crust like or branching growth on rocks or tree trunks. It will be brown in color when it dries out, but with recent rain, gray, green and yellow color returns. When working with elementary school children in Sabino Canyon, the naturalists often use the following phase:
“Alice Algae took a lichen to Freddie Fungus,
but now their relationship is on the rocks”.
