Hunter’s Moon Sets Over Tucson (October 27, 2015) — Image by kenne
Autumn Sky
Downward waft the autumn leaves;
The hunters’ moon’s on high
Cetus Swims the starry deep
Cepheus rules the sky.
Rulest I said, well maybe so,
But what of Aries, Perseus, Fomalhaut?
Andromeda and others too,
Lend their light to grace the blue.
I love them all, I wish they’d stay
But like the leaves they’ll drift away.
— G. O. Pitcovich

After spending most of the summer and early autumn at higher elevations in the Santa Catalina Mountains, this past Friday SCVN led their first Friday hike in Sabino Canyon and were welcomed with beautiful fall weather. The hike was to have been to Seven Falls, but because of high waters, the Phoneline Trail became the hike of choice.

Sonoran Desert Sunrise — Image by kenne
Despairing of God, I came to the desert seeking saints.
The tongue of the tribe sleeping in my family
whispers spiny songs: chumpaco / place where they killed
the dogs: huirives / bird: bacochibampo / the water of the
serpents: bajeribampo / water of the lizards: cuirimpo /
the place of the drummers.

This Rose Makes for a Peach of a Shot — Image by kenne
“When autumn darkness falls,
what we will remember are the small acts of kindness:
a cake, a hug, an invitation to talk, and every single rose.
These are all expressions of a nation coming together and caring about its people.”

Japanese Garden — Computer Painting by kenne

My home was at Cold Mountain from the start,
Rambling among the hills, far from trouble.
Gone, and a million things leave no trace
loose, and it flows through the galaxies
A fountain of light, into the very mind —
Not a thing, and yet it appears before me:
Now I know the pearl of the Buddha-nature
Know its use: a boundless perfect sphere.

A fun hike with beautiful views north and south of the Santa Catalina Mountains can be experienced by hiking the Green Mountain trail out of the General Hitchcock campgrounds to the Guthrie Peak trail. The hike was the last scheduled hike for the SCVN Friday hikes at the cooler temperatures in the mountains before beginning our winter hikes in Sabino Canyon next week.
The morning forecast was for rain in the mountains, spreading to the lower elevations by late afternoon. This might explain why Tim and I had only one hiker (Deborah) with us, the least number in our experience guiding the SCVN hikes. Reasons for such a low number are sheer speculation at this date, however we will continue to evaluate the service SCVN is providing through our scheduled Friday public hikes.
Regardless, the weather was great and as you can see from the photos in this posting, we had another excellent hiking experience. This was Deborah’s first Guthrie Peak hike and what better way than with Tim and I giving her all our guide attention.

Sacred Datura — Computer Art by kenne
Each day I meditate on my kinship with nature
and the spirits that give life to and nourish the world.
Sometimes it’s in the middle of an early morning hike
during which time I connect to the powers
of nature that are often delivered by a messenger,
an important symbolic object such as a
sacred deer;
sacred cactus;
sacred butterfly;
sacred mountain;
sacred datura.

I look at the world around me and allow photography to become a record of my living. The process of deciding to take a photograph, what Henri Cartier-Bresson called the ‘decision moment’, the time in which the elements of movement are balanced, has become a continuing process.
As an artist I can modify perspectives before and after the moment. For Cartier-Bresson, “. . . photography is the simultaneous recognition, in a fraction of a second, of the significance of an event as well as of a precise organization of forms which give the event its proper expression.” By making use of today’s digital tools, the ‘decision moment’ becomes fluid, a ‘constant moment’.

Greater Roadrunner Grunge Art — Images by kenne
“Clownlike it may appear to human eyes, but the Roadrunner is a very effective predator. Its speed on foot is not just for show: it captures not only snakes and large insects, but also fast-running lizards, rodents, and various small birds. Gambel’s Quail may pay scant attention to the Roadrunner at most seasons, but they react to it violently when they have small young, and with good reason: given an opportunity, the Roadrunner will streak in to grab a bite-sized baby quail.”

Sneeze Weed Blossom — Computer Art by kenne
Good in all,
In the satisfaction and aplomb of animals,
In the annual return of the seasons,
In the hilarity of youth,
In the strength and flush of manhood,
In the grandeur and exquisiteness of old age,
In the superb vistas of death.
Wonderful to depart!
Wonderful to be here!
The heart, to jet the all-alike and innocent blood!
To breathe the air, how delicious!
To speak—to walk—to seize something by the hand!
To prepare for sleep, for bed, to look on my rose-color’d flesh!
To be conscious of my body, so satisfied, so large!
To be this incredible God I am!
To have gone forth among other Gods, these men and
women I love.

Blood Moon Collage (September 27, 2015) — Image by kenne
Last night’s sky was clear, making this special event even more special to photograph. This blood moon was also a supermoon (when the moon’s orbit brings it closest to our earth), making for a “super blood moon”, which hasn’t happen in 33 years.
The images were taken with a Nikon D800, using a 28.0-300.0 mm f/3.5-5.6 lens — manual exposure; 300 mm focal length; f/5.7; auto white balance.
