“. . . vistas I never thought I would paint
in a canyon I never thought I would revisit —
I never thought I would restore the experience
in words, I never thought I would write.”

Hiking the La Milagrosa / Agua Caliente Canyon Loop is a popular hike offered by the Sabino Canyon Volunteer Naturalists (SCVN). The 6.5-mile loop takes the hiker up the ridgelines and down into two canyons located on the eastern edge of the Santa Catalina Mountains. We usually hike the loop clockwise, taking the Milarosa trail first looping back through the Agua Caliente Canyon, but this morning (December 9, 2016) we reversed the loop hike thereby providing a different perspective for those of us who usually hike the loop clockwise.
The vistas from the ridges provide hikers beautiful panoramas of Tucson, the Catalina Foothills and the Santa Catalina Mountains through which the lower segment of the Catalina Highway can be seen. Since this was a beautiful clear morning, I decided to take the time to take photos that could be merged into panoramas in Photoshop. ENJOY!

Forgotten Dreams In An Abandoned Ranch House — Computer Art By kenne
Forgotten Dreams
Every trail has a past.
Hundreds of hikers have
walked its rocky path
sharing stories laced
with embellished truths,
myths and legends.
Combining several trails
that loop through
the La Milagrosa and
Agua Caliente Canyons,
we began our hike
walking down Horsehead Road
through a gated community
before taking a rocky 4WD road
to the La Milagrosa Ridge trail
passing by an abandoned ranch house —
light now shines through its roof,
giving exit to forgotten dreams.

100 Year-Old Cliff Dweller — Image by kenne
This giant saguaro cactus is easily over 100 years old. Located on the steep Milagrosa canyon wall, which may have served to protect it over the years.

La Milagrosa Trail (December 5, 20014) — Panorama Image by kenne
Somewhere between
the La Milagrosa
and Agua Caliente Canyons,
we take turns guiding hikers
through beautiful desert vistas
screaming at our eyes.
The desert trail
and canyon walls
graced with deeper colors
after yesterday’s rains
and the Christmas green
of the resurrection plants.
The Sonoran desert,
a piñata filled with
surprises and gifts —
I’m not blind to the worth
of nature’s gifts
invoking my soul.

“Aren’t the clouds beautiful? They look like big balls of cotton…
I could just lie here all day, and watch them drift by…
If you use your imagination, you can see lots of things in the cloud formations…
What do you think you see, Linus?”
“Well, those clouds up there look like the map of the British Honduras on the Caribbean…
That cloud up there looks a little like the profile of Thomas Eakins, the famous painter and sculptor…
And that group of clouds over there gives me the impression of the stoning of Stephen…
I can see the apostle Paul standing there to one side…”
“Uh huh… That’s very good…
What do you see in the clouds, Charlie Brown?”
“Well, I was going to say I saw a ducky and a horsie,
but I changed my mind!”

Milagrosa Loop Images by kenne (Click on any of the thumbnail images to see a slideshow.)
This was a Sabino Canyon Volunteer Naturalists (SCVN) lead hike, December 6, 2013. The loop trail is in the La Milagrosa Canyon and Agua Caliente Canyon east of Tucson. This is a great winter hiking trail, one I hope to do again soon.
