Cathedral Rock Trail, Sedona, Arizona — Images by kenne
“This is a short 0.7 mile but strenuous trail which quickly rises 608 feet in elevation. The midsection of the trail
has a near vertical segment which requires climbing. The trail is well marked and many hikers can be found
using the trail. The trail traverses the east side of the mountain and thus the hike is better taken in the
afternoon so one is hiking in the shade. On the top, there is a narrow plateau with steep slopes on each side.
The width is about that of a wide sidewalk and several stones are perfect for sitting. One can enjoy the view if
not afraid of the heights.” Source: Sedona Hiking Trails

Sedona Area Panorama (Red Rock Country) — Photo-Artistry by kenne
Our continual mistake is that we do not
concentrate upon the present day, the
actual hour, of our life: we live in the past
or in the future; we are continually expecting
the coming of some special moment when
our life will unfold itself in its full significance.
And we do not notice that life is flowing life
water through our fingers.
— Father Alexander Elchaninov

And Then
The labyrinths
that time creates
vanish.
(Only the desert
remains.)
The heart,
fountain of desire,
vanishes.
(Only the desert
remains.)
The illusion
of dawn and kisses
vanish.
Only the desert
remains.
Undulating desert.
The illusion
of dawn and kisses
vanish.
Only the desert
remains.
Undulating desert.

Deserts Come and Deserts Go
Is it a desert, only time will tell,
a landscape between heaven and hell.
Every ten thousand years or so,
the ice will come, the ice then will go.
In one place the ocean throws water across the land,
another place flowers beyond numbers to count grow.
In time, only a desert will tell,
the span between heaven and hell.

Cathedral Rock in the Santa Catalina Mountains
Cathedral Rock in the Sedona Verde Valley
In a Magritte sky
clouds formed
from the smoke
of a stemmed pipe
one sunkissed on
Catalina peaks
the other an
Upflow Vortex
each a cathedral rock
named in history
remaining covered
invoking mystery
concealing nothing.

“We are surrounded by curtains.
We only perceive the world
behind a curtain of semblance.
At the same time,
an object needs to be covered
in order to be recognized at all.”

March
Lists help,
composed during long afternoon showers.
Though just now, crossing off
alphabetize books in study
and moving on to vacuum stairs,
I find clumps of white hair on the rug.
The dog is shedding.
She thinks spring is coming.

Joy and tour guide, Richie.
A Day in the West Jeep Tour (June 15, 2016) Images by kenne
During our recent brief stay in Sedona, Jill, James, Joy and I went on a two hour jeep tour behind Thunder Mountain. I used James as an excuse to finally get Joy out on a back-country jeep tour. Considering that Joy was still recovering from surgery, she did quite well.
The ride was a joy with Joy!

One of the Tlaquepaque Count Yards In The Late Afternoon, Tlaquepaque Arts and Crafts in Sedona (June 14, 2016) — Image by kenne
So hear the tones of cedar flow,
Reminding us from place afar,
A gift of art from Navaho,
a sea of sound — a reservoir.
The breathy notes pushed from the wood
with airy tones in triple trill,
is calling us to brotherhood
that bathes the heart when all is still.
Listen as it calls the eagle,
the bear, the deer and buffalo,
brothers of the kingdoms regal,
sister spirits of long ago.
These ancient sounds from wooden voice,
in sentient wait below the bark,
now sing in beauty to rejoice —
returning song to Meadowlark.

Five in the Afternoon
“A boy brought the white sheet
at five in the afternoon.
A frail of lime already prepared
at five in the afternoon.
The rest was death and death alone
at five in the afternoon.”
— Federico Garcia Lorca
