Cactus Wren Atop A Saguaro   4 comments

Cactus Wren Atop A Saguaro — Image by kenne

The Cactus Wren, (Campylorhynchus brunneicapillus, meaning ‘brown-capped curved bill’)
is conspicuous in behavior, size, and plumage—no doubt leading to its being chosen
as Arizona’s State Bird. Related to tropical wrens in Mexico,
this boldly patterned species is larger and unlike the rest of
North America’s wrens. — Tucson Audubon Society

Saguaro Blossoms — Surprised By A Heartranding Cry   2 comments

Saguaro Blossoms — Image by kenne

Although flowers bloom it’s awkward to say that they are flowers
because they are not flowers, but thorns disguised as yellow pistils
and stamens surrounded by the petals made of pieces of colorless
paper. Moreover, their fragrance bears no meaning at all because t
hey bloom in the night,

and each time when the scorching sun brands the cactus’ skin
it cries out loud from the pain of the thorns pierced through
it’s burning flesh to form renewed skin,
then, surprised by a heartrending cry,
the birds flap their wings to fly in the air abandoning the cactus.

I’ll Take Saguaros On The Rocks — Image by kenne

In the first decade of life
saguaro growth is  slow
making the small plant
very fragile to the elements.

The rocks provide protection
much like bushes and trees
Taking on the name ‘nurse trees,’
Large rocks function as ‘nurse rocks.’

A Light Exists In Spring   1 comment

A Light Exists In Spring

A Light exists in Spring
Not present on the Year
At any other period —
When March is scarcely here

A Color stands abroad
On Solitary Fields
That Science cannot overtake
But Human Nature feels.

It waits upon the Lawn,
It shows the furthest Tree
Upon the furthest Slope you know
It almost speaks to you.

Then as Horizons step
Or Noons report away
Without the Formula of sound
It passes and we stay —

A quality of loss
Affecting our Content
As Trade had suddenly encroached
Upon a Sacrament.

Saguaros In Sabino Canyon — Image by kenne

A Mien to move a Queen—
Half Child—Half Heroine—
An Orleans in the Eye
That puts its manner by
For humbler Company
When none are near
Even a Tear—
Its frequent Visitor—

Saguaro — Ink Stamp Art, A Visual Dichotomy   Leave a comment

Saguaro — Ink Stamp Art by kenne

A genuine (true) dichotomy is a set of alternatives that are both mutually exclusive and jointly exhaustive.
A set of alternatives A and B are mutually exclusive if and only if no member of A is a member of B.
This image is a visual example of a genuine (true) dichotomy.

“The passage into mystery always refreshes. If, when we work, we can look once a day upon the face of mystery,
then our labor satisfies. We are lightened when our gifts rise from pools we cannot fathom. Then we know they are
not a solitary egotism and they are inexhaustible.”

The Squeeze Is On   2 comments

The Squeeze is On-72“The Squeeze is On” (Saguaro Cactus in Sabino Canyon) — Image by kenne

This saguaro cactus is on the cliff-side of the Bluff Trail in Sabino Canyon.
It’s about two feet long and may have been around for a couple of decades now.
You may think the saguaro has a dilemma, being “stuck between and rock and a hard place.”
The crack in the cliff has provided protection for this young saguaro, so it should
keep on growing for years to come.

Persistence — The Mighty Saguaro   1 comment

There’s a thousand “Can’t-be-done-ers”
For the one who says “It can!”
But the whole amount of deeds that count
Is done by the latter clan.
For the “Can’t-be-done-ers” grumble,
And hamper, oppose and doubt,
While the daring man who says “It can!”
Proceeds to work it out.
