Roadrunner On Patio Wall — Image by kenne
There is something mildly suspicious
about the way he freezes mid-stride,
as if someone has pressed pause
on a very small documentary.
Then—click—
he resumes,
like a thought returning
after wandering off
to check on something
it didn’t quite trust.
I imagine his mind full of notes:
check under rock,
avoid hawk,
ignore human with camera.
A tidy philosophy,
really.

Roadrunner — Image by kenne
Just another hot day
when roadrunners move
across and down the street
jumping up on our patio wall
in route to the water fountain —
it’s a roadrunner day.

Roadrunner in Olive Tree
Almost Blown Off the Limb by Strong Gust of Wind — Images by kenne
Roadrunner on limb
Checking out the olive tree —
Ornate tree lizards.
Looking all around
A windy day in the tree
Safer on the ground

Morning Shadows in the Canyon with a Friend (Greater Roadrunner)– Images by kenne
Surprise
Since moving to the Sonoran Desert,
I have had the time and inclination to
Communicate with the stars, trees,
And animals; able to live more intensely.
To walk in the morning as the sun
Comes up over the Rincon Mountains
Casting long shadows along the path as
The sky keeps its freshness from the night.
The air is crisp. I watch as birds fly by
Evoking in my thoughts, the dawn breeze
Becomes brisker, creating movement sounds
Percussion for the bird’s songs.

Roadrunner — Photo-Artistry by kenne
Desert morning friend
I see you waiting for me
Ahead on the trail.
Crown and tail pop up
Tired of waiting, you move on —
Catch me if you can.

Visitor On The Patio Wall — Computer painting by kenne
Big bird on the wall
Lizards near the olive tree
A hot desert breeze.
Big bird looks around
Sound of water from fountain
Many attractions.
Small birds rest nearby
Waiting turns at the fountain
Big bird taking time.

I could hear a clicking noise
coming from a mesquite tree
and began to look around
not sure what it might be.
Turns out the noise was a call,
the mating call of a cockoo bird
as he was standing tall
waiting for his call to be heard.
Then, nearby on the ground
his call was returned —
he began limb hopping down
to the sound he knew was earned.

Greater Roadrunner in the Brush — Image by kenne
Been seeing a lot of these guys lately. With much cooler days some of the greater roadrunner’s food,
like tarantulas, scorpions, and reptiles are underground. This one was all about business, hunting through the brush.

105 Degrees In The Shade — Images by kenne
Home from a hike on Mt. Lemmon
just finished downloading images
when Joy announce to me,
“A roadrunner was on the patio.”
Grabbing my camera off the desk
I went to the patio door
where I could see the bird
on a branch of the olive tree
above the water fountain —
105 degrees in the shade.
