Marine Blue Butterfly On Blue-Green Algae Scum (Cienega Creek) — Image by kenne

In our recent walk along Cienega Creek, much of the creek’s surface water has begun to dry up, leaving behind pools
of water perfect for the buildup of blue-green scum. We noticed a marine blue butterfly flying over one of the pools,
suddenly landing a leaf floating on top of the scum.

This butterfly can be identified as a Marine Blue by the narrow cream and broader brown bands
on its ventral wing surfaces and the two small eye-spots on the hindwings.

The secret lies in the present —
if you pay attention to the present,
you will be able to improve it.
And if you improve the present,
whatever happens afterwards will be better too.
Each day brings us Eternity,

Fire On The Mountain

Down valley a smoke haze
Rises above the Catalinas
Six days of fire and heat
After 100 days of no rain.

I try to remember the smell of rain
Of mid-afternoon thunderstorms
In the Sky Islands of my beautiful desert
Nurturing wildflowers and butterflies.

I turn and go back to Mt. Lemmon
Thinking of the recent moments
Hiking with friends through young
        aspens and pines
        caught on steep ridges
Between heaven and earth.

“I saw a poet chase a butterfly in a meadow.  He put his net on a bench where a boy sat reading a book.
It’s a misfortune that it is usually the other way round.”
