Houston Blues   Leave a comment

The Old Rhythm Room, Houston’s Washington Street (09/13/03) — Image by kenne

If you knew Houston blues, you knew that Washington Street had its share of stories. On that night twenty-two years ago, Mark May’s set was another chapter. In the dim light, you could see The Blues Hound and Jimmy “T-99” Nelson, figures who had witnessed the scene shift from the Chitlin’ Circuit days to modern club stages, still holding onto the music.

The Early Days Of Ken & Mary’s Blues Project (10/18/02) — Image by kenne

Blues Project Memories

The little things
make a life—
a door opened,
a song shared,
a light left burning
for friends on the road.

Ken & Mary know this—
their house
a porch of welcome,
their hearts
a steady rhythm.

Blues spill
like warm laughter,
like sorrow made holy,
each note a bridge
over lonely places.

East Texas nights,
and still
the music rises—
a promised land
not empty,
but filled
with song.

He stands in the shadow
zipper rasp loud as crickets,
beer can on the ground.

The pumps long silent,
just dust and a flickering
fluorescent store light.

Moonlight bathes the lot,
silver on gum wrappers, rust—
he waters the past.

Somewhere down the road,
the dance hall dreams in splinters—
still catching blues songs.

The Blues Is About That Raw Honesty   4 comments

Houston Blues Legend Diunna Greenleaf — Image by kenne

“[Blues] is about – and it’s always been about – that raw honesty with which the blues express our experiences in life, something which all comes together in this music, in the words as well. Something that is connected to us, common to our experiences. To be honest, though, I don’t think anyone really knows exactly what it is. I just can’t stop playing it.”

I learned about the death of another blues legend, Mark May, from my blues friend, Sonny Boy Terry, on Instagram.

Like so many Blues fans in Houston, he will be sorely missed.

“I always kind of look at it like this, if I’m in a room full of guitarists, I’m the singer.
And if I’m in a room full of singers, I’m the guitarist.
And I’m happy that way no matter what because I can be useful.
All I want to do is play music, play the songs.”

It’s been years since we last saw bluesman Buddy Guy. Now, at 86, he still has a lot of his mojo.
