Hiking Bighorn Country In The Santa Catalina Mountains — Image by kenne
“Nature” is what we see—
The Hill—the Afternoon—
Squirrel—Eclipse—the Bumble bee—
Nay—Nature is Heaven—
Nature is what we hear—
The Bobolink—the Sea—
Thunder—the Cricket—
Nay—Nature is Harmony—
Nature is what we know—
Yet have no art to say—
So impotent Our Wisdom is
To her Simplicity.

Greater Earless Lizard Sunning On Rock — Images by kenne
“Mad dogs and Englishmen,” said British playwright Noel Coward in his famous ditty of 1932, “go out in the midday sun.”
So, too, he might have added, does the greater earless lizard, which seems to relish the midday sun of mid-summer
in the rocky, sandy desert terrain of the northern Chihuahuan and northeastern Sonoran Deserts.

“Those who contemplate the beauty of the earth find reserves of strength
that will endure as long as life lasts. There is something infinitely healing in the
repeated refrains of nature — the assurance that dawn comes after night, and spring after winter.”
― Rachel Carson

“We seldom realize, for example that our most private thoughts and emotions are not actually our own.
For we think in terms of languages and images which we did not invent, but which were given to us by our society.”

Santa Catalina Mountains — Image by kenne
“I felt like lying down by the side of the trail and remembering it all.
The woods do that to you, they always look familiar, long lost,
like the face of a long-dead relative, like an old dream,
like a piece of forgotten song drifting across the water,
most of all like golden eternities of past childhood or
past manhood and all the living and the dying and the
heartbreak that went on a million years ago and the clouds
as they pass overhead seem to testify
(by their own lonesome familiarity) to this feeling.”
–Jack Kerouac

Storm Clouds Over the Foothills — Image by kenne
Once in the Catalina Foothills,
I found a new state of being
No more tangled mind.
I hiked with my camera
Photographing nature
Taking whatever comes,
Like a drifting cloud.

Spring Flowers Along The Trail — Image by kenne

who explains nothing
and defends nothing,
but only knows where
the rarest wildflowers

Gila Monster — Image by kenne
The Gila monster is a species of venomous lizard native to the Southwestern United States
and the northwestern Mexican state of Sonora.
trespasser
I walk, head down, careful footing as I
study the terrain, the way the shadow
from the mountains cover the valley floor
the dry wash beds, marked with
wildlife tracks, deep and desiccated
no monsoon to wash them away
no relief, no rain to fill these
empty washes, to water this
wilderness that lies dry, parched
the cloudless sky above hides nothing
except for the desert creatures
absent in the heat of the day
as I retrace my path, I step around a gila monster
sunning himself on a rock, his rock
reminding me where I am I am
a trespasser; this is all their’s
and their tracks and presence remind me
step carefully, move slowly, retreat

Wild Sunflower, Santa Catalina Mountains — Image by kenne
Ah! Sunflower!
Ah! Sunflower, weary of time,
Who countest the steps of the sun,
Seeking after that sweet golden clime
Where the traveler’s journey is done;
Where the youth pined away with desire,
And the pale virgin shrouded in snow,
Arise from their graves, and aspire
Where my sunflower wishes to go!

Spring Break At Seven Falls in the Sabino Canyon Recreation Area — HDR Image by kenne
May my feet always touch the earth
Stretching from the desert to the mountains
While I’m still able to hike on the rocks
Made by fire and time.

Barefoot Photographer Near Sabino Creek (October 13, 2010)
WHAT?
A hiking break
Socks and boots off
Feet in the stream
What?
Camera in hand
Capturing the moment
Kids jumping in the water
What?
A place in nature
People love to visit
Sharing the experience
What?
Barefoot kids running
Mothers watching
With the back of their eyes
What?
Spring’s last whispers
In summer’s tongue
Talking to the kids
What?
A pond in a stream
Recognizes flamboyance
In 1000 little mirrors
What?
Don’t give up on nature
Forever and never
Every whim of my will
What?
Sounds of running water
Have spiritual overtones
Calming my mind
What?
