Parish Larkspur WIldflower Images by kenne
Conditions for wildflowers are much better this spring than last year.
Yesterday (March 20, 2015) we saw several parish larkspur along the Bear Canyon trail at about 2,700 ft.
There were many, at first glance I thought they were lupines.
Last year I posted images of a single parish larkspur April 16th near Hutche’s Pool (3,900 ft.)

On of my favorite hikes is up to Hutch’s Pool. Located above Sabino Canyon, it provides a good workout and excellent views.

Black Swallowtail In Flight — Image by kenne
As we move more into spring, many butterflies are flying and being recorded by many naturalists. However, trying to photograph them can be difficult. It’s as if each butterfly is trying out his wings by flittering around without stopping. As I started to get frustrated watching them flying around, I decided to try photographing them in flight, which can be tricky not always knowing what the automatic-focus would focus on when zooming in on the butterfly. These two photos represent my best tries. Admittedly, if I was staying in one place and not out hiking, I might have better results.

Trying to name some of these insects and spiders can be a real challenge for this novice naturalist. Input is very welcomed. Most of the images were taken in Sabino Basin near Sabino Creek, November 18, 2011.

Nothing like a lizard promenade on a cool sunny morning. These two guys were soaking in the sun on trees near Hutch’s Pool in Sabino Canyon (11/18/11) — a promenade in the morning!
