Saguaro Sunrise — Image by kenne
“The passage into mystery always refreshes. If, when we work, we can look once a day upon the face of mystery,
then our labor satisfies. We are lightened when our gifts rise from pools we cannot fathom. Then we know they are
not a solitary egotism and they are inexhaustible.”
— Lewis Hyde

A haunting morning
Transforms a normal
And simple aesthetic
Trying for unsettling
Depths of darkness.

Desert Sunrise — Digital Art by kenne
Another morning
getting up at five
providing several
hours cool hours
before the sun
heats up the day —
just another day
of neither adding
or taking away, but
I don’t give a damn.

Hiking Douglas Spring Trail — Image by kenne
Tomorrow’s Sabino Canyon Volunteer Naturalists (SCVN) Friday hike will be on the Douglas Spring Trail in the Rincon Mountains. For the first time in several years, I will not be participating. I will miss being on this hike.
A flat start into the morning sun
Hikers leaving behind long shadows
On a trail that will soon disappear
As we start our climb in
The mountain’s shadow, stopping
Only to watch things themselves
Letting the sun and earth
Go about their changes.

The Capture of Mr. Sun
The sun is a lion
circling his cage,
Caught for you, brought for you
on this wheeled stage,
Through fixed bars glaring
his wrath and his rage
Like a pen for the baby
or bedrails in old age.
The lion is a sunflower
with a broad gold face,
Its petals outstreaming
like a mane or the rays
Of that candescent Power
we all watch pace
Through the gendering heavens
on its circuit of days.
The flower is tracing
the sun on its rounds;
The carnival moves through
its orbit of towns;
The lion's cage rolls
your streets up and down
Where be pads and we shiver
at his smile, his frown.
-- W. D. Snodgrass

Sunrise In Sabino Canyon — Image by kenne
A short walk up the path,
Taken by the silence stillness
As the sun rises over the ridge —
A moment captured forever.

“Desert Silhouette” — Image by kenne
“Oh that the desert were my dwelling place,
With only one fair spirit for my minster.
That I might forget the human race,
And hating no one, love her only.”
— Lord Byron
