A lonely sign
on the hill
has no
directions
if it did
we would
be doubtful.

Zebra-Tailed Lizard   Leave a comment

Zebra-Tailed Lizard (Callisaurus draconoides) — Image by kenne

Zebra-tailed lizards are the fastest lizards in the desert. They have an odd habit of curling their tail
over their back, thus revealing the striping, and then waving it slowly from side to side. The most widely
accepted theory is that this lulls their predators like a hypnotist’s watch, which prevents them from reacting
quickly when the zebra-tailed lizard suddently zips away.

“Some nights we can see light of fires as Indians dance
And the eyes of God shine through the coyote fence.”

All Tangled Up In Barbed Wire   Leave a comment

All Tangled Up In Barbed Wire — Image by kenne

I don’t know, why I don’t
Put it out baby
We kiss and the flames
Just get higher
But yeah I know
When I hold onto you baby
I’m all tangled up in barbed wire
I get burned, I don’t learn
I’ll be back, give it time
Yeah, I know it sounds crazy
But guess I like playing with fire

Where Are We?   Leave a comment

Where Are We? (Doubtful Canyon) — Photo-Artistry by kenne

One hazel lost a leaf of gold
From a tuft at the tip, when the first voice told
The other he wished to know what ’twould be
To be sixty by this same post. “You shall see,”
He laughed—and I had to join his laughter—
“You shall see; but either before or after,
Whatever happens, it must befall,
A mouthful of earth to remedy all
Regrets and wishes shall freely be given;
And if there be a flaw in that heaven
’Twill be freedom to wish, and your wish may be
To be here or anywhere talking to me,
No matter what the weather, on earth,
At any age between death and birth,
To see what day or night can be,
The sun and the frost, the land and the sea,
Summer, Autumn, Winter, Spring,—
With a poor man of any sort, down to a king,
Standing upright out in the air
Wondering where he shall journey, O where?”

No Passage (Doubtfull Pass In Doubtfull Canyon)– Image by kenne

At one time

a stagecoach route.

Now, no passage

without a key —

private property,

keep out,

no hunting,

call this number —

really, out in the

middle of nowhere.

Southwest Ridge

When the sun rises over the mountains,
the air is still cool,
meaning that by the end of the day,
                                          when the sun has crossed
the main ridge and gives light to
the other side the air is hot
                                                                 and dry.
This means that trees growing on the
                                         northeast face of any given
mountains flourish, while the southwest face
                                                        is generally left barren-

there are, however, always a few brave
                                    tufts of foliage
                         who dare to challenge the
                                                       infernal heat
                                        and survive.

                                                                                             so too,
                                                                                    with people.

Days Of Drought In April   Leave a comment

Coyote Fence — Photo-Artistry by kenne

April is the cruellest month, breeding
Lilacs out of the dead land, mixing
Memory and desire, stirring
Dull roots with spring rain.
Winter kept us warm, covering
Earth in forgetful snow, feeding
A little life with dried tubers.
Summer surprised us, coming over the Starnbergersee
With a shower of rain; we stopped in the colonnade,
And went on in sunlight, into the Hofgarten,
And drank coffee, and talked for an hour.
Bin gar keine Russin, stamm’ aus Litauen, echt deutsch.
And when we were children, staying at the arch-duke’s,
My cousin’s, he took me out on a sled,
And I was frightened. He said, Marie,
Marie, hold on tight. And down we went.
In the mountains, there you feel free.
I read, much of the night, and go south in the winter.

Standing In The Eye

Look around
what do you see?

A bright sun
in a blue sky

above a desert
of rocks and sand

surrounded by
mountain ranges —

look again and
you will see life

you can only see
standing in the eye.
