Houston’s Blues Scene Busier Than Ever 6 comments
Down In Houston Blues — Image by kenne
Any talk of The Blues being dead needs to check out the scene down in Houston. Live Blues music in Houston has been the star of Texas for some time and now with the help of the Houston Blues Society and the continued support of KPFT Blues programmers, healthier than ever. . . . more at Houston Press.
The Houston Press article doesn’t mentioned it, but I would suggest the that growth of social media is playing a big role in the live music market in Houston. One of my most viewed videos is that of Sonny Boy Terry IBC @ Dan Electro’s, October, 2009. (1,200 views)

Double Bayou Dance Hall In Chambers County 5 comments
Sweet Mama Cotton with Pete Mayes & The Texas Houserockers at The Double Bayou Dance Hall — Image by kenne
This revisit came about by an email I receive yesterday from Sheryl Shaw, who is with the Chambers County historical commission. They are gathering photos and memorabilia from Double Bayou Dance Hall and Pete Mayes and the Texas Houserockers for exhibiting at the museum. She requested use of the video of photos I a short time after Pete’s passing away, which would be an honor for it to be a part of the exhibited.
For the uninitiated, The Double Bayou Dance Hall, in the small black community of Double Bayou in Chambers County sixty miles east of Houston. I dedicated to the memory of Pete Mayes and Billie Dietz. It was through Art and Billie Dietz that we learned about the Double Bayou Dance Hall. Steve Bucher also educated me on Dance Hall. The old Double Bayou Dance Hall still exist, but barely since hurricane Ike played hell with the 1941 structure. As secretary for the historical commission, Sheryl is helping to renew interest in restoring the dance hall. If you would like to learn more about their efforts, you can contact Sheryl at Dunkit42@aol.com.

Dave Parsons — Texas Poet Laureate, 2011 1 comment
Dave Parsons — Photo-Artistry by kenne
On June 6, 2009, posting on Paul Ruffin being selected as the Texas poet laureate, I wrote: “As a member of the Montgomery County Literary Arts Council (MCLAC) and close friend of founder, Dave Parsons, it was with mixed emotions that we received the news Paul’s being named the new Texas poet laureate, an honor for which both were finalists.” Although the irony of Dave having nominated Paul can’t go unnoticed, Dave would have it no other way. We are blessed to have both these great writers living in Montgomery County, fast becoming a literary hub.” So NOW MONTGOMERY COUNTY HAS TWO TEXAS POET LAUREATES! Yes, I just learned from a Facebook entry posted by Nancy Parsons, Dave’s wife, about this great news. This recognition is indeed a most deserving honor for my dear friend, Dave. CONGRATULATIONS!

Video of the Week — Sex Beat Leave a comment

There is so much about the music of Texas singer/song writer, Alejandro Escovedo, to like; it’s not always easy to get your feelings around it. The easiest way for me is to say, he speaks to me and I hear him. He is a master of his art. In a similar way, Todd V. Wolfson’s video grabs my inter feelings. In some ways it’s like a dream sequence, loaded with the rough disconnect dreams can be with reality. This is a great art video! Take the time (approximately ten minutes) to watch it. It’s cool!
