Hepatic Tanager — Image by Bill Kaufman

Fellow Sabino Canyon Volunteer Naturalist (SCVN), Bill Kaufman set out the other morning to photograph an Hepatic Tanager in the canyon’s riparian area. As luck would have it he was able to photograph this beauty singing in the morning sunshine.

While hiking Pima Canyon yesterday, Bill shared his photographing experience, later in the day emailing the above image.

Great image, Bill — photographing this sing bird is made difficult by its unsettled movement high is the trees. Thanks for sharing.

Thy duty, winged flame of spring, is but to love and fly and sing.

Now That There’s Water In The Creek, We Are Ready For The Season   5 comments

Now a little over a week ago, we received rain in southern Arizona for the first time in months. The creek in Sabino Canyon had been dry for some time. Yes, there were a few pools here and there with a few gila chub, the native fish found in the creek, but no running water. For weeks I’ve had elementary school kids stand above the dam telling them they were “walking on water”, only that it was a few feet below the sand. It’s amazing how the desert begins to transform from the site of water running through the canyon — a site for dry eyes!

Then,  there is the sound of water causing one to rush down to the water-side, like a magical sound of the piper.

Yesterday, some of us were hiking through the Sabino Canyon riparian area enjoying the winter solstice colors along the creek — tis the season to be merry!

Funnel-Web Spider: Part II   6 comments

Funnel-Web Spider Whose Web Funnels Into A Tunnel-like Hole — Image by kenne

Last week during the SCVN nature walk, I photographed the above image, which was one of the images in a blog entry slide show. At the time, I incorrectly named the funnel-web spider as the tunnel-web spider. Thanks to my SCVN mentor, Ned Harris and SCVN neighbor, Bryna Ben-Asher, I now know the correct name. As I have in the past, I often learn much from my mistakes. Additional information on these most interesting creatures can be found at The Firefly Forest.

The above image was taken in the Sabino Creek Dam area, and at the time the spider was obviously not interested in coming out to greet me. However, yesterday in the same general area we spotted a more hospitable funnel-web spider who was willing to sit long enough for me to “capture the moment.”

Ned and Bryna, thanks for viewing my blog and noting the incorrect name. Your feedback is most appreciated.

Last Sunday my Sabino Canyon Volunteer Naturalist (SCVN) mentor, Ned Harris, and I spent the morning around the Sabino Creek Dam area to help me get a jump-start for the SCVN training in September. The slideshow below contain some of the images I took during the morning walk.

While out with the Sabino Canyon Volunteer Naturalist looking at animal, insect and plant life, some of us noticed the setting moon, creating a “Capturing the Moment” opportunity.
