Tomorrow’s Sabino Canyon Volunteer Naturalists (SCVN) Friday hike will be on the Douglas Spring Trail in the Rincon Mountains. For the first time in several years, I will not be participating. I will miss being on this hike.

A flat start into the morning sun
Hikers leaving behind long shadows
On a trail that will soon disappear
As we start our climb in
The mountain’s shadow, stopping
Only to watch things themselves
Letting the sun and earth
Go about their changes.

The Little Rincons

East of the Rincons
Fenced-in weathered grasslands
Near Turkey Creek.

4X4 drive reachable
From tall oaks along the creek
To golden meadows.

Enter a new world
Hidden from desert norm
A breath of cool air.

Passby cattle lands
A short dirt drive north of I-10
Near Hidden Pastures.

A wilderness route
Not considered a trail hike
Takes cross-country skills.

View from Wasson Peak, in the Tucson Mountains, looking towards the Tortolita Mountains,

Santa Catalina Mountains, and the Rincon Mountains.

Standing on a desert peak
you may feel like a
pebble of sand in a vast desert,

you are the entire desert in a pebble.

Italian SpringsHiking the Italian Springs Trail (April, 2012) — Image by kenne

bushed

a trail cursed
and charmed
taking a breather
in solitude
and shade
alligator junipers
mountain pines
overlooking a
big sky pass
scrambling time
and seasons
whence we came
where we went
Redington road
to the plateau
beneath
Mica
mountain summit
till you get there yourself
it remains our paradise
sharing our wanderlust
in this digital-based world
