SCVN Guided Hike On Lower Butterfly Trail To Leopold Point   Leave a comment

I just revisited this posting from July 27, 2013, which contains several images of Jim Martin (In the white t-shirt and was the tail guide on this hike), one of our long-time SCVN volunteers and was an Emeritus member until his death last week. The slideshow is not working in this Reblog, so click on View original post below.

Great Tail Grackle   1 comment

The grackle’s voice is less than mellow,
His heart is black, his eye is yellow,
He bullies more attractive birds
With hoodlum deeds and vulgar words,
And should a human interfere,
Attacks that human in the rear.
I cannot help but deem the grackle
An ornithological debacle.

As we grow old, remember to stay young.

As we grow wiser, remember to stay foolish.

As we grow weak, remember to stay strong.

As we grow dull, remember to stay sexy.

As we grow stupid, remember to stay sensible.

As we grow suspicious, remember to stay trusting.

As we grow forgetful, remember to stay attentive.

As we grow gloomy, remember to stay cheerful.

As we grow conventional, remember to stay enlightened.

As we grow frail, remember to stay sturdy.

As we grow, may we stay forever
young,
foolish,
strong,
sexy,
sensible,
trusting,
attentive,
cheerful,
enlightened, and
sturdy — simple words to live by.

Words are powerful!
Why?
Because they can hurt and
they can bring people together.
Both acts have powerful results.
Words divide us.
However,
the power of words
is that once divided,
they can be used
to bring us back together.
We should not allow words
to change our relationships,
because unlike the cucumber
that becomes a pickle
and can never be a cucumber again,
we can break down the walls that divide.

Bookstores Can Survive By Being Creative   1 comment

Recently, Joy received a Bookmans gift card. Bookmans is more than just a bookstore, it’s an entertainment exchange with a commitment to the people and communities they have served for over forty years. While there, I selected three books: Epitaph for a Desert Anarchist — The Life and Legacy of Edward Abbey by James Bishop; The River of Doubt by Candie Millard; Spanish Essentials for Dummies, the last two in preparation for my August trip to the Amazon in northern Bolivia. — kenne
