Courtyard gate now closed—
sun case shadows on worn walls,
prayers drift through warm air.

Dead tree stands at gate—
giving tourists directions
soguaro stands guard.

San Xavier Mission – Side Entrance

Worn stone beneath sunlit sky,
a quiet door where shadows lie.

Not the grand, gold-gilded face,
but a hush-filled, sacred place.

Pigeons coo from clay-white walls,
cracked and strong through centuries’ calls.

Wind slides in with whispered grace,
as time slows down in this still space.

Here, the faithful stepped aside,
seeking shade and strength inside.

A humble arch, half in light—
faith not loud, but burning bright.

“One doesn’t stop seeing.
One doesn’t stop framing.
It doesn’t turn off and turn on.
It’s on all the time.”

San Xavier del Bac Mission — Images by kenne

Many people ask why the east tower was never finished. The builders ran out of money. The whole
church is unfinished—you can even see bits of murals penciled—but never painted—on the interior walls.
It remains a work in progress.

Village of del Bac
A place where water appears
Kino built a church

A lot of stories
Are told about the White Dove
Both true and made-up

Continue to live
Like those of Tom and Jerry.
Statuary shaped.

Lighting Candles At Mission San Xavier del Bac    Leave a comment

Tom Walking to Mission San Xavier del Bac in Tucson — Image by kenne

My hiking buddy, Tom Markey, has been home from the hospital and rehab for about ten days.
This past Sunday, I took him for a short walk in the Sweetwater Wetlands Park, and yesterday
he called me to see if I would go with him and Pat to Mission San Xavier del Bac — he wanted to light
some candles ahead of his third chemo session today.

Tom is a Quaker, so I couldn’t pass up an opportunity to ask him, “What’s a Quaker doing
lighting candles in a Catholic Church?” He replied, “I’ll take whatever help I can get — what have I got to lose.”
Tom is a very spiritual man.

While at the mission, I also lit some candles for Joy’s younger sister, Janna, who passed away yesterday
from a cardiac arrest. May she rest in peace.

Silhouette In The Window

 He sits in the dark
A silhouette in the light
Shinning through God’s window
My subject of admiration
A glowing image in the darkness
Only to become the stuff of dreams
