Monument Valley

if you listen
midst the silence of the valley
the voices of the Elders from the monuments
whisper down,

“You are welcome here.
This land to which we were entrusted
by the Great Creator of all things
is ours to tend,
is ours to share,
is ours to enjoy,
but not ours to keep;

for we pass it down to our children
with the same admonition”

and in what seems a barren setting,
abundant in desolation,
lacking in precipitation,
we look to the monuments
whose beauty stands as a reminder
that in such a harsh place
we are not forgotten
by Him

Horse Corral In Monument Valley — Image by kenne

Horses are the dolphins of the plains, the spirits of the wind;

yet we sit astride them for the sake of being well-groomed,

whereas they could have all the desire in the world to bolt,

but instead, they adjust their speed and grace, only to please us,

never to displease.

A park not to love
Dramatic rock formations

Capitol Reef National Park Panorama — Image by kenne

“Capitol Reef National Park is in Utah’s south-central desert. It surrounds a long wrinkle in the earth known as the Waterpocket Fold, with layers of golden sandstone, canyons and striking rock formations. Among the park’s sights are the Chimney Rock pillar, the Hickman Bridge arch, and Capitol Reef, known for its white sandstone domes. In the north are the towering monoliths of Cathedral Valley.” â€• Google

“What one thinks of any region,
while traveling through,

is the result of at least three things:
what one knows,
what one imagines,
and how one is disposed.”

— Barry Lopez

I dream of a quiet man
who explains nothing and defends
nothing, but only knows
where the rarest wildflowers
are blooming, and who goes,
and finds that he is smiling
not by his own will.

Mighty and dreadful are your tall columns here,

(through soul and love put you in deep shade)

for you outnumber man and outscore even life itself,

and you are roughly tied with God and, strangely, eyes.

Arches

Under a moonlit sky
Stone arches tower above
Millennia in the making
Thoughts swirl through my head
Faster than the wind
Eroding my essence, like a smoothed stone
Shaping my being, sculpting my sense of self
Though the age old rocks whisper back
Only silence
For Mother Nature cares not for the trials of man
I am at the mercy of the beauty she created
Standing before me
In perfect silence

beautiful red rock, created from the erosion of Navajo Sandstone is the most visited slot
canyon in the Southwest.

While in southern Utah we drove through this beautiful park on a splendid weather day on our way to St. George, Utah where we would be spending the night before driving on to Las Vegas. More Zion National Park images later.

Sandstone towers seem like sentinels

Savoring the rays of the searing sun

Accentuating the red rock’s rusty colors”

11. Meditation

Our life’s greatest challenges will be won
With the spirit and not by the sinews
At times next to you the Dance’s ghosts run
Other times they can be found within you

Smooth, rolling strides become my rhythm and rhymes
Subtly pick open my heart and mind’s locks
At peace, I'm inured to passage of time
A slack-jawed Buddha floats between the rocks

Sun-baked vermillion cliff, eternity
Spirit of the wild, you are the portal
Stretching out to you, encompassing me
Melt, intertwine, these moments immortal

Fallen angels, my soul is expurging
When the body, mind, and soul are merging
