Not Till We Are Lost

Not till we are lost

do we learn the song

the dust’s been singing—

how red earth remembers

every footprint,

even the ones

that never came home.

The sky don’t answer—

it listens.

Twisted trunk lies still,
red cliffs rise beyond its bones—
time walks through the dust.

Amber buttes ablaze,

crimson earth and shadowed blue—

silence paints the land.

Monument Valley

if you listen
midst the silence of the valley
the voices of the Elders from the monuments
whisper down,

“You are welcome here.
This land to which we were entrusted
by the Great Creator of all things
is ours to tend,
is ours to share,
is ours to enjoy,
but not ours to keep;

for we pass it down to our children
with the same admonition”

and in what seems a barren setting,
abundant in desolation,
lacking in precipitation,
we look to the monuments
whose beauty stands as a reminder
that in such a harsh place
we are not forgotten
by Him

Horse Corral In Monument Valley — Image by kenne

Horses are the dolphins of the plains, the spirits of the wind;

yet we sit astride them for the sake of being well-groomed,

whereas they could have all the desire in the world to bolt,

but instead, they adjust their speed and grace, only to please us,

never to displease.

11. Meditation

Our life’s greatest challenges will be won
With the spirit and not by the sinews
At times next to you the Dance’s ghosts run
Other times they can be found within you

Smooth, rolling strides become my rhythm and rhymes
Subtly pick open my heart and mind’s locks
At peace, I'm inured to passage of time
A slack-jawed Buddha floats between the rocks

Sun-baked vermillion cliff, eternity
Spirit of the wild, you are the portal
Stretching out to you, encompassing me
Melt, intertwine, these moments immortal

Fallen angels, my soul is expurging
When the body, mind, and soul are merging
