Complexity Emergent
By Nancy Kenney Connolly

Paint strikes a glistening
cord across a canvas an arpeggio
of sun-on-Aegean blue

and it’s all about an arc
enfolding someone cradled there an elegy in tangerine
or maybe it’s a lullaby the way a child

begins to see
  in cumulus clouds a menagerie
or close harmonies on fire we are given

   more
than first imagined this is purple born of blue this
   is grief transformed in song.

Canyon Spillway — Image by kenne

weeds grow

where water

no longer flows

gently over

the canyon spillway . .

marsh

of cracked soil

a dragonfly

passes over

remembering

what was

desert natal waters . .

leaving behind

dark shadows

moved by

hot desert winds . .
