Two years ago this month Joy and I moved from The Woodlands, Texas, to Tucson, Arizona. When our friend and singer/songwriter, Dave Pierce heard of our move, he wrote the following:
We’re gonna spend some time in Tucson.
Watch the mountains wear away.
Gonna spend some time in Tucson,
Where the moment makes the day.
We’ll eat the sunrise for breakfast,
Have blue skies for lunch.
For dinner, ponder on a falling star,
Least, that’s our hunch.
We hear a song from The Old Pueblo,
Calling out our name to dance,
We’ve got to leave for Tucson,
While we’ve got the chance.
Gonna spend some time in Tucson.
Watch the mountains wear away.
Gonna spend some time in Tucson,
Where the moment makes the day.
What better place to live life to its fullest — Tucson, where the pace is laid back, making it easy to live in the moment.
Dave is a very good singer-songwriter who has a fulltime day job in the oil industry. In 2009, Dave shared a song he had written about the recession — “You Can’t See Main Street from Wall Street,” which I recorded at a crayfish boil at his house.

You can’t see Main Street from Wall Street, any more.
The wolves of Manhattan keep us Standards, Poor.
A trillion more dollars, just borrowed on time.
But who signed your name, on the long dotted line?
If we aint got a dollar, we aint got a dime.
So let’s spend a trillion, we’ll all do just fine.
Just print some more money; we’ll use the red ink,
We can pay off our loans, to hell what they think.
You can’t see Main Street from Wall Street, any more.
The wolves of Manhattan keep us Standards, Poor.
A trillion more dollars, just borrowed on time.
But who signed your name, on the long dotted line?
So get the press running, print money galore.
We’ll pay off the house, buy a car, shop some more.
We’ll cut banker’s bonus, by at least 10 percent,
And they can get it all back, from the money we rent.
China owns Wall Street, Japan owns LA.
Their just the landlord, who cares what they say?
They get their rent, from the dollars we print.
Aint that why we make ’em, down there at the mint?
If we cant afford, the roof overhead,
Let’s keep our hands in our pockets, try renting instead.
There’s lies in the smiles, the slick bankers wear,
He’s smarter than you, that’s why he’s there.
You pay him to borrow, then you pay off his debt,
You’ll pay off some more, you aint heard of yet.
The kids can take over, it’s their turn to pay,
Don’t do as we do, just do as we say.
You can’t see Main Street from Wall Street, any more.
Ken Grumbles, Dave Pierce & Joe Hill — image by kenne
Whether in a pub, a concert hall or someone’s living-room, poetry put to a chant, rap or song has a way of stirring the inter feelings of all of us and will generally create a memorable experience. Such was the case the Friday before Thanksgiving. Dave Pierce invited some of his friends over to connect with the word as music with two of his fellow American cantautori, Ken Grumble and Joe Hill. What an enjoyable evening of singing, story-telling and pickin’! The following video represents only a fraction of the evening, and like so many snapshots will mean much more to those, who by the presense, will add so much more to this 4 1/2 minute video.
Arriving late to Ken & Mary’s Blues Project last Saturday, we were only able to get a few photos and no video before Ray Bonneville’s gig. However, we should be able to capture more at Dave C&W jam tonight. Joe Hill and Ken Grumbles are expected to be part of the jam. Look for a future posting on the jam.
Dave Boils Crawfish and Introduces New Political Song
This past Sunday (April 12, 2009) Dave Pierce had friends and family over for a crawfish boil, after which he played guitar and sang his songs. One of the songs was the recently written, “You Can’t See Main Street from Wall Street.”
Chorus
You can’t see Main Street from Wall Street, any more.
The wolves of Manhattan keep us Standards, Poor.
A trillion more dollars, just borrowed on time.
But who signed your name, on the long dotted line ?
