Blues Project Memories

The little things
make a life—
a door opened,
a song shared,
a light left burning
for friends on the road.

Ken & Mary know this—
their house
a porch of welcome,
their hearts
a steady rhythm.

Blues spill
like warm laughter,
like sorrow made holy,
each note a bridge
over lonely places.

East Texas nights,
and still
the music rises—
a promised land
not empty,
but filled
with song.

“If this guitar could talk – don’t you think you might hear

How the road goes on forever, just follow the trail of tears”

— from “If This Guitar Could Talk” by Mean Gene Kelton

*****

Mean Gene Kelton was one hell of a rockin’ bluesman. He was also that down home Mississippi boy who loved sitting around picking, playing the harp and telling stories — never a moment to write about in “Gigs from Hell.”

I recall Gene telling me that he was getting tired of the “regular gig thing,” which is one of the reasons he started his weekly acoustic “Rooster Jam” at Rooster’s in Baytown.

In May of 2008, Ken & Mary’s Blues Project provided one of those perfect “under the stars” venues for the “unplugged” Gene.

And yes, we are still following “. . . the trail of tears.”

In October of 2013, we were visiting family and friends in the Houston area. The timing was great since we could
attend one of Ken & Mary’s Blues Projects in Porter, Texas. The headliners for this event were Guthrie Kennard and Julie Bonk.
I just learned that Dallas singer-songwriter Guthrie has cancer and is undergoing radiation. However, it hasn’t stopped him;
he’s out on the road doing shows. Guthrie, may the force be with you.

The musician talks to you with

rhythm, and words that find their way

into the secret places of your soul

turning on the truth of being human.

Kenneth and Mary Harris produced house concerts for family and friends

for over two decades in the piney woods of East Texas —

“House concerts are our life

House concerts are our everything

House concerts give us joy

House concerts keep us happy

House concerts keep us dancing.”
