Capturing The Moment — Broad-billed Hummingbird   3 comments

A Male Broad-billed Hummingbird In Sabino Canyon, January 4, 2012 — Image by kenne

This little guy is not normally found here in the winter months. When spotted near the top of a mesquite tree, he didn’t seem to be bothered by our large group of nature walkers. Even so, I was reluctant to move around nearer to him for a better angle since others were enjoying the view.

  1. What a wonderful photo. In Continental Divide, in the summer, Ethel attracts hundred of hummingbirds from multiple species to our yard and the pinions around our yard. Given that this is January, seeing a broad billed iridescent green is definitely a treat.

  2. It was about 40 degrees when the photo was taken. He stayed in place for about a minute before flying on, which made me wonder if he was just cold or saving energy. Notice how his feathers are fluffed.

  3. What a little beauty! You lucky soul, you!
