Cactus Dodger — Image by kenne

No matter where you live in North America, the sounds of summer are occasionally made by cicadas. In the desert southwest where, particularly large cicadas known as “cactus dodgers” (Cacama valvata) perch on prickly pear (Opuntia spp.) and cholla (Cylindropuntia imbricata) cacti and sing their loud, distinctive songs in the scorching, mid-summer heat.

  1. I find it difficult to get good looks at the cicadas (I’m often trying), so I really enjoyed this spectacular photo with the details, Kenne. Cool eyes and beautiful wings.

  2. They are usually very difficult to spot, especially the cactus dodger, since they are usually found in cacti like prickly pear & cholla, not on this plant. This was an easy shot on a trail in Sedona. By the way, the noise on the trait was very nosey.
