Death Be Not Proud   2 comments

Mount Hebron Cemetery, Winchester, VA (August 22, 2021) — Photo-Artistry by kenne

This morning I received word that the husband of Linda Parrish, a friend, and co-worker at Texas A&M,
had passed away October 29, 2021. Paul Austin Parrish was 77 years old.

Death be not proud, though some have called thee
Mighty and dreadfull, for, thou art not soe,
For, those, whom thou think’st, thou dost overthrow,
Die not, poore death, nor yet canst thou kill mee.
From rest and sleepe, which but thy pictures bee,
Much pleasure, then from thee, much more must flow,
And soonest our best men with thee doe goe,
Rest of their bones, and soules deliverie.
Thou art slave to Fate, Chance, kings, and desperate men,
And dost with poyson, warre, and sicknesse dwell,
And poppie, or charmes can make us sleepe as well,
And better then thy stroake; why swell’st thou then?
One short sleepe past, wee wake eternally,
And death shall be no more; death, thou shalt die.

The Simple Truth   Leave a comment

Some things
you know all your life. They are so simple and
   true
they must be said without elegance, meter and
   rhyme,
they must be laid on the table beside the
   salt-shaker,
the glass of water, the absence of light gathering
in the shadows of picture frames, they must be
naked and alone, they must stand for
   themselves.

As An Aggie, The 2012 Heisman Trophy Is For Us!   Leave a comment

My first memories of the Heisman Trophy and Texas A&M was when I was playing high school football in the late 50’s and heard about the ’57 Heisman Trophy winner, John David Crow. Last night, freshman quarterback, Johnny Manziel (Johnny Football), was awarded the 2012 Heisman Trophy, making him the first freshman ever to win this coveted award.

“It’s a great feeling to know people are looking up to me in the aspect of being here at the Heisman Trophy in New York,” he said.

“It makes me feel like a kid again, like I used to look up to people, and it’s a great feeling.”

One writer shouted, “You’re still a kid.”

“I still am. I just turned 20 [Thursday],” Manziel replied. “I’m out of the teen stage, I guess.”

P.S. In addition to my having received a doctorate at A&M, three of our five children have received degrees form A&M (not diminishing the fine institutions of Texas Tech and the University of Houston).

Call Him Johnny Heisman!

A Break From The Normal Stuff — Way To Go Aggies! Whoop!!!   2 comments

Aggies at the World Sports Grille In Tucson — A scene that can be found all around the world. Image by kenne

“Oh ye of little faith!” I have been connected to Texas A&M since 1977, getting a PhD in 1980 and having three children who have degrees from there. An Aggie learns early on what it is to be let down, but not today — No. 15 Texas A&M upsets No. 1 Alabama 29-24 in Tuscaloosa! Whoop!!! Whoop!!! Whoop!!!

Way to go “Johnny Football!”

Capturing the Moment – The Last Meeting of SLAVE   Leave a comment

SLAVE (Society of Learning in Adult & Vocational Education) – 1979

While at Texas A&M working on my doctorate, I was involved in forming a graduate student organization in the College of Education, which went by the name SLAVE (Society of Learning in Adult & Vocational Education). Although we may not look like productive group, we put out a newsletter, held “brown-bag” luncheon seminars and student symposiums. This is an image taken at our last meeting, which we chose to have on the highest point in Brazos County.
