I saw them on my deck from time to time and I made sure to “shoo” them away. They are most definitely carpenters and can make a perfectly round hole in wood, without using any kind of tool (other than their own ingenuity). I have never seen a human carpenter that as exact and as focused on a job as a carpenter bee.
