“In a lifetime of crossing borders I find this pitiless fence the oddest frontier I have ever seen —
more formal than the Berlin Wall, more brutal than the Great Wall of China,
yet in its way just as much an example of the same folie de grandeur.
Built just six months ago, this towering, seemingly endless row of vertical steel beams
is so amazing in its conceit you either want to see more of it, or else run in the opposite direction —
just the sort of conflicting emotions many people feel when confronted with a peculiar piece of art.”

I’ve heard the expression “as ugly as a mud fence” but I think that this fence is uglier than a mud fence in its composition and for what it symbolizes. I think I opt to run away as I think that fence is an ugly statement and desecrates the land.
Fences are discussing!
Borders…only exist in the mind
. . . unless you are fenced out.
The Limes in Roman times and the Chinese Great Wall made (some) sense in their times for a while, but this fence doesn’t. As long as there is such a disparity in wealth between Mexico and the US, nothing short if a Berlin Wall [plus that ignominious fence all across Germany], there will always be people who try – and succeed – to overcome this fence. As there were, even with the threat of being killed in the attempt – people trying to cross from eastern into western Germany. So, even that fence didn’t work. But trust politicians to present a fence as a solution to illegal immigration!

We don’t seem to be able to learn from history. So much of the border problem has to do with the US Drug War. Today’s Arizona Daily Star has an article on how “Smugglers pulling in young accomplices along Arizona-Sonora border.” All the fences in the world will not stop the outcomes of our ill-conceived war on drugs — when will the nightmare end??!!
. . . here’s the Star article link — http://azstarnet.com/news/local/border/smugglers-pulling-in-young-accomplices-along-arizona-sonora-border/article_1ba4f904-cfb6-5251-849e-7984d32ce83c.html
Thx for the link!
I agree: no fence will ever be able to stop a determined person. And as to when the nightmare will end: no idea! And also, to tell the truth, no(t much) hope.
