Located in Tucson, Arizona, the Pima Air & Space Museum is one of the largest in the world. (The largest non-government funded museum.) On the second day (Saturday) of the Bailey’s visit, we started the day at this most interesting facility next to Davis Monthan Air Force Base. The museum also provides a bus tour of the 309th Aerospace Maintenance and Regeneration Group (AMARG), also known as the “Boneyard,” which is located on Davis Monthan Air Force Base. However, the tours are only M-F, so we were not able to take the Boneyard tour.

WWII Military Barracks at Pima Air & Space Museum — Images by kenne & Joy
While touring the Pima Air & Space Museum this past Saturday, I could not pass up being photographed in front of the old WWII military barrack on the museum grounds. Thousands of these building were hastily built in the early days of WWII to house the needed recruits. One such place was Fort Polk, LA, where I spent my basic training days in early 1966. As fate would have it, about ten years later, my faculty office at the University of Louisville was in one of these old barracks. This one at the museum has to be one of the few remaining original WWII barracks — at least, I hope so. They were in poor shape in 1966 , so one can only imagine their condition as housing today. Most of these barracks were built about the time I was born. I like to think I have aged better than this old building. (The above building houses a model airplane exhibit.)
