Summer Hiking In The Catalina’s — Butterfly Trail   9 comments

Although our hiking groups had already started some hikes at higher elevations in May, the summer schedule doesn’t start until June. It’s nice to have terrain and temperature options in the Tucson area.

Yesterday, with the expected Tucson high of 101 degrees, we decided to drive up to the Mount Lemmon area to hike the Butterfly Trail and take in the 60-degree temps. (An hours drive away.) The morning started off cloudy but soon became partly cloudy. We have started having some clouds, but the moisture doesn’t make it down when the humidity is 3%.

Although we are experiencing some cool March weather in mid-May, our hiking has begun the assent to the upper elevations in the Santa Catalina mountains. Mt. Bigelow is 24 miles from Tucson at at 8,500 feet. This is a beautiful hiking area, which includes the remains of some of the area fires occurring about eight years ago. Most of our hiking will remain at the higher elevations in the mountains surrounding the greater Tucson area until late September.
