“Wilderness is not a luxury but a necessity of the human spirit, and as vital to our lives
as water and good bread. A civilization which destroys what little remains of the wild,
the spare, the original, is cutting itself off from its origins and betraying the principle of
civilization itself.”

  1. You have a good sense of humor, kenne, to turn a “painted desert” black & white 🙂

    • I have had photos of the Painted Desert for some time now. Maybe it’s just me, but color images don’t stand the test of time like black & white. They tend to be more dramatic.

  2. Could I ask your opinion? I am transposing a Civil War Diary about the Mississippi Marine Brigade. An artist has drawn the boat he served on in black and white and thinks that would fit better with the time than a colored drawing. I’d like your feedback since you are such a great photographer.

  3. Fantastic quote! I wish we could get more people to see how valuable “empty” land is; I suppose one way is to provide opportunities for them to experience what the wilderness has to offer.
