The Sonoita Vineyards — Image by kenne
Yesterday we had our first opportunity to get out of Tucson, and for good reason, the Sonoita Vineyards Harvestfest, 2010. Sitting on a hilltop of rolling grasslands at an elevation of 5,000 feet, sixty-five miles southeast of Tucson, it’s makes for a picturesque drive on the first day of August. It was a nice reminder of the many ecological contrasts that exist in a relative short drive from our desert hacienda.
The vineyard grows a verity of grapes, producing wines from Cochise County Colombard, a “porch” wine, to Desert Zin, very sweet dessert wine. The wine tasting included about one dozen wines, most of which we will not be recommended to our visitors. This might be because of our dry pallet, which might explain why we preferred the Cochise County Colombard “Off-Dry White.”
Even so, the event and the country-side make southern Arizona wine country a place to take visitors.
