THE CUCKOO’S STREET

OUT of sedgy fields
    I came on Sráide-na-Cuacha.

What did you see there?

Castles white with lime;
Cuckoos in gold cages,
And black queens feeding them;
Trees dropping moons
Into vats of mead;
A goat-fair, —goats
Whose horns were double rainbows;
Goatherds fiddling,
Naked babies dancing;
Jugglers throwing gourds
Through the rings of brooches;
Old Father Time
Sitting drunken on a stone.

Out of Sráide-na-Cuacha
I came on ferny hills.
