“I can see you’re sad,
Even when you smile,
Even when you laugh

I can see it in your eyes,
Deep inside you want to cry

We gon’ pull together through it,

We gon’ do it
We’re all we got in this world
When it spins,
when it swirls

When it whirls,
when it twirls

Lookin’ puzzled, in a daze
I know it’s confusing you
Now hush little baby, don’t you cry
Everything’s gonna be alright
Stiffen that upper lip up little lady, I told ya
I’mma here to hold ya through the night

And if you ask me too
I’mma gonna buy you a mockingbird
I’mma give you the world
I’mma buy a diamond ring for you
I’mma sing for you
I’ll do anything for you to see you smile

And if that mockingbird don’t sing
And that ring don’t shine
You can take my hand
I’mma gonna lead you through
this broken promise land
Yes I can oh yes I can”

  1. I used to sing “Hush Little Baby” to all my kids, in my frog-horn voice, when they were in the crib and toddlers, so I really, really enjoyed the poem, Kenne. The photo is abstract in its background, highlighting the realism of the mockingbird in the foreground. Sometimes I miss the southwest, especially when in late March we have a major Wisconsin snowstorm brewing in the skies.

  2. Beautifully rewritten Kenne . Kenneth tells everyone we are dancing till the music stops . Our best to you and Joy. It’s not easy but with your soul mate by your side it makes things less scary. At least for me. Saw a mockingbird at the mailbox in the cypress tree. Mary

  3. I love you too.
