My, how the world has changed from 1949 to the present. The People’s Republic of China was a one party communist state (still is) that maintained isolation from the rest of the world. When I was growing up, China was that mysterious land on the other size of the globe — a culture completely opposite from the western world. But today, because of globalization, cultures are no longer pure. It was some thirty years ago that China reopened to the rest of world and began absorbing western influences at a rapid pace. Yet, when viewing photos of the Beijing auto show last week, I was reminded of how much change has taken place from my childhood image of China, or even from the 1989 student protests in Tiananmen Square. But then, I don’t need the photos from the auto show to illustrate China’s western influences — consider the Olympic games.
