Hiking To The Top   7 comments

would love to feel
old abilities
coming on strong
weaken more by age

still trying
to spread
my wings
mountains on the left
mountains on the right

reaching deep inside
opening those
old doors
releasing those
old strengths

I can climb
I know I can
I can climb
to the top

in search
of those old feelings
now only in my dreams
trying to deal with
too much stuff

still can’t get enough
keep on climbing
sucking more air
a whole lot of air

I can climb
I know I can
mountains on the left
mountains on the right
still, miles to go

one switchback at a time
posing
for the fleet of foot
and young at heart

as I catch my breath
I can climb
I know I can
under indigo skies
mountains to climb
following old images

painted with the
brush of experience
sometimes I get lost
in a lapse of time
lapse into a blur

this time around
as I near the top
looking out over
my imagination

life is more
dramatic

extreme
highs and lows

time to rest
slowed by the winds
blowing dust, when
suddenly the winds stop

all the windmills stop
a vision of death
where are the desires?
where are the myths?
where are the models?

I’m at the top
the view is exciting —
true excitement
comes only
from being there.

  1. Love the poem, Alexa

  2. Having reached that age I appreciate the words. Having looked down from the mesa and wondered about the return trip makes it even more true 😂

  3. My dad always said, “I think I can. I think I can.” when trying to climb new heights. As we get older taking just one step at a time gets us places we want to explore. Don’t stop!

This morning I learned of the death of Dorothy Wilhelmsen at 94. She led some of my early hikes on Mt. Lemmon while still in her early 80s. A model hiker! — kenne

  6. Kudos on a nice piece of introspection. One can really sense who you are in these few words. I second the insight of the last stanza.

How apropos that I find this in my reading list on a morning when I was looking back at the photo archives.
