Mean Gene Kelton Shares Story of Dallas Gig with Diunna Greenleaf   1 comment

Six years ago tomorrow (February 20, 2009) I posted the video of Gene Kilton at Houston’s Big Easy telling the story of when he and Diunna had a gig in Dallas. I love Gene’s music, better yet, hearing him tell stories. So on this “Throwback Thursday” I’m rebloging one of my favorite videos — enjoy.

Early Morning Sunrise Photoshoot In Sabino Canyon   8 comments

A couple of weeks ago I received a call from Gene in Peoria, Arizona, expressing an interest in photographing sunrise in Sabino Canyon. He and five others wanted to get an early start (6:30 am) to be ready for a sunrise photo shoot. Not being familiar with the canyon, Gene asked if a naturalist could lead his group to a good location. Seeing a good opportunity to shoot sunrise in the canyon myself, I agreed to lead them to a location overlooking the Sabino Canyon dam area.

Yesterday morning we met in front of the Sabino Canyon Visitors Center where I met Gene, Phil, and John, minus three of the group who chose to pass on the early morning shooting. What a great way to start the day!

Make everything as simple as possible, but not simpler.
A man should look for what is, and not for what he thinks should be.
We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.
A question that sometimes drives me hazy: am I or are the others crazy?
Any intelligent fool can make things bigger and more complex…
It takes a touch of genius – and a lot of courage to move in the opposite direction.
All religions, arts and sciences are branches of the same tree.
It’s not that I’m so smart, it’s just that I stay with problems longer.

Some mountain trails are obscured

as the trail is less traveled.

Some hikers are good at

tracking the trail less traveled,

while others lose direction

unless there are cairns

hiking up the mountain with you.

Philip Levine — The Voice Of The Voiceless And That’s The Simple Truth   1 comment

I just learned from my good friend, Larry Bailey, about the passing one one of the 20th centuries greatest poets, Philip Levine, the “working man’s” poet. I had the honor of meeting him twice, once in the earlie 90’s and again in 2005. May he rest in peace, although he is probably currently writing poetry in a parallel universe. — kenne

You Are My Valentine   Leave a comment

If there were no words, no way to speak
I would still hear you
If there were no tears, no way to feel inside
I’ve still feel for you

And even if the sun refused to shine
Even if romance ran out of rhyme
You would still have my heart until the end of time
You’re all I need my love, my valentine

All of my life
I have been waiting for all you give to me
You’ve opened my eyes
And shown me how to love unselfishly

I’ve dreamed of this a thousand times before
In my dreams I couldn’t love you more
I will give you my heart until the end of time
You’re all I need my love, my valentine

La la la la la la

And even if the sun refused to shine
Even if romance ran out of rhyme
You would still have my heart until the end of time
‘Cause all I need is you, my valentine
Oh, you’re all I need my love, my valentine

The Sonoran Desert Is Turning Into A Sea Of Floral Yellow   3 comments

Brittlebush Blooming In The Sonoran Desert — Images by kenne

With good rains earlier this month the Sonoran desert is beginning to explode into a colorful display that changes the brown desert landscape into a sea of floral yellow. With a little rain, this common desert scrub will begin to bloom and will do so almost year round. I last posted brittlebush blossom images two months ago.

In the Sonoran Desert mountains

the sound of spring is running water

with cheery birds providing the background vocals.

Hiking mountain canyons in the spring

requires rock hopping

across the many stream crossing.

By mid-day, butterflies and bees

share in nature’s annual awakening.
