Winter Solstice — Images by kenne
A solstice night
in the dead of winter,
strategically placed lighting
on the courtyard wall.
Dark shadows imprinted
beyond the naked trees,
in this gloomy season of mists,
concealing signs of winter’s damage,
where only ghosts abound.
Tomorrow morning
the low sun starts
a minute-by-minute journey back,
not behind, but within
it’s new spring companion.
But for now,
nature remains soulfully raw.

On this Winter Solstice morning 2021, I look back at some of my previous Winter Solstice postings — here’s one from December 2013, which contains images of earlier postings. On December 21, 2009, my brother Tom shared the following:
“In The Golden Bough, Sir James Frazer describes early Europeans building solstice fires at year’s end to strengthen the sun. Seeing the sun steadily weakening, steadily falling in its arc across the sky, they did what they could to restore it to health. Birds and other creatures of the natural world respond to the length of winter days. Much of the rhythm and timing of birds’ behavior, including migration and breeding, is determined by the length and intensity of the sun’s light.” — kenne
