Some of the many rock formations to be seen along the Catalina Highway. The Rincon Mountains are in the distance. Image by kenne
The road from Tucson up to Mt. Lemmon has many names: Catalina Highway, Mt. Lemmon Highway, General Hitchcock Highway, Arizona Forest Highway 39 and Sky Island Scenic Byway. This beautiful scenic drive is recognized as such by the National Scenic Byways Program, and an Arizona Scenic Road by the Federal Highway Administration. Because of cooler summertime temperatures and the availability of many hiking trails and camping sites, the Catalinas become a very popular escape from the desert heat. During this time of year, I’m driving the mountain highway several times each week to hike in the more pleasant temperatures, which at the top of Mount Lemmon are normally about 30 degrees cooler than the Tucson valley.
